The biggest thing I saw on the webs that people are upset about (and this seems a legitimate criticism).....why are the Betazoids using sign language. They are....literally telepathic (not to be confused with Deanna Troi's emphatic nature for being a half-betazoid.) They can literally talk in each others minds!
The president (her father) is deaf.

At least that’s how it appeared to me.

just saw Episode 1 and I liked it.

I didnt like Discovery so not up on the Burn or such (though I take it it was an apocalyptic even that destroyed the old Academy and much of the federation?)

I like the character stories so far - Calebs drama looking for his mother was an interesting way to start him as a rebellious genius. I like the idea of a Klingon Med Student and the rest of the crew too, though I do hope that dont end up being "school clique" cliches. I even liked Sam being annoying, she comes off a bit Autism-coded so I wonder if that was intentional, though I've never understood how 'holograms' worked as 'people'.

Funnily enough when the Khionian guy turned metal to go and walk on the hull, I couldnt help thinking of them as something of a superhero team - like X-Men Academy - especially when you add Sam interfacing with computers and Calebs various 'skills'. Not sure what Genesis can do yet, but it does seem she is captain material (and the most compelling actor of the cadets too)

I agree the robots were a bit jarring and Cadet Masters shouting unnecessary.

The Burn was an event that caused most of the galaxy’s dilithium to suddenly go inert, which in turn caused all active warp cores to explode. Lots of people died, and the galaxy collapsed back into a sort of Dark Ages since warp travel became so rare.

By the time Discovery shows up, even Earth has withdrawn from the Federation, which is now based on a space station. Discovery is able to help start rebuilding the Federation thanks to its spore drive.

While investigating the cause of the Burn, Discovery finds a planet made of dilithium, which allows the Federation to start operating its traditional warp-based starships again.

My head cannon to account for this:

1) Many betazoids speak so much in their heads (especially now with their isolation), that they haven't really developed good speech. So they just don't talk, sign language is the best they have for external communication.

2) The daughter's on a limiter for her telephatic abilities, so perhaps she cannot speak telepathically. So the sign language while they are walking is a curtosy to her.

But yeah on the surface it does seem really strange, and clearly not established before with the betazoids we have seen on previous series.
Like Morrus said, he's deaf. There's always the simple explanation that not "speaking" openly, in public, would be considered rude. I think that it's more down to how in Next Gen, those involved were sorry that they gave Betazoids so much metal power. If you watch carefully after "Farpoint", you'll see that they had already scaled back on Deana's power by quite a bit from the pilot.

I don't know if it was mentioned in "Discovery", because I didn't watch it past the first few episodes, but I'm wondering if perhaps their "Psionic Wall" is maintained by all of them concentrating on it, otherwise limiting their abilities?
