Not reading the thread, as I am not up-to-date on episodes, and want to avoid spoilers, but I want to jot down an idea in relation to the Betazoids of this time period.

In the Next Gen/ DS9 era (around 2269-ish), Betazoids are telepathic. Half-Betazoids like Deanna Troi are empathic.

So, per Episode 2, "Beta Test" happening in the 3190s, Betazoids are not telepathic, they are empathic.

Either they screwed up, or there's something there. For sake of argument, assume the latter.

Commandant Ake says she's some 400 years old, and non-telepathic Betazoids don't strike her as strange.

So, between 2270 and Ake's birth around 2790, Betazoids generally lost telepathy. But also note that Ake et all thought Betazoids were HUGE to the Federation at the time of The Burn (in 3069). But they aren't that big a deal in Next Gen's 2269.

Thus, in the 500 years between Next Gen/DS9, and Ake's birth, the Betazoids become a big deal, and their telepathy degrades. They also seem to lose their characteristic black irises...

So, over that half-millennium, they rise to prominence and... interbreed a lot?

This would explain Tarima Sadal, the daughter of the Prime Minister, wearing an inhibitor. It isn't that she's an empath that "feels too much". She's actually a telepath, but now in a culture that doesn't have anyone left to guide her to learn to control her powers!

Interesting theory. Also rather sad.

I like that.
There are clearly far more "half-breeds" around, in this time period, for whatever reason. And some rather arcane ones, at that.

Is the whole of the Academy faculty immortal?

So we have Holly Hunter (700 years old), the doctor from Voyager (1000 years old), and now Dax. We just need to find out that Tig Notaro is secretly a thousand year old android to complete the assemble.

I mean, technically, Jett Reno is 980 years old.

I guess a faculty made up entirely of people who actually remember the old Starfleet makes sense?
That's explicitly part of Vance's pitch to Ake, so no doubt that was part of his thought process while staffing the Academy.

Anyway, Episode 5 was both delightful and destroying. Considering my fits of giggling over the opening, and then to be weeping at the end? Bravo Starfleet Academy, I'm now officially sold.

I kinda feel like, though... how do some of these folks get through basic training? I've (accidentally) seen some youtube videos about cadets being drummed out of the Royal Navy for the most trivial offences. An unironed shirt, mild disrespect, other minor disciplinary issues. The early weeding process is vicious, for obvious reasons. And yet these guys are acting like schoolchildren and nobody bats an eyelid. I get that Starfleet isn't the military... but also, it is the military. But discipline is basically a casual chat with Holly Hunter who doesn't give a damn amd just sits upside down and quotes a proverb.

I dunno. I like it. But I wish it felt a bit more like a military academy than an American high school.

Not reading the thread because spoilers, but my spouse and I just saw a trailer for this (I know, it's been out for ages) and are gonna give it a try. They're a bit more of a Trekkie; I tend to find ST properties hit or miss.
