I was thinking of starting around level 6 and even bending the rules to get players the characters they want to play. I may just do what you suggest and go with D&D as the assumed rules, stealing what I want from d20 modern. Thanks.

My gaming group is a smart and open minded bunch. Most have played and enjoyed multiple editions of D&D (many of us have enjoyed all of them). At least half of us have DMed at some point in the past and a good number of us have tried or regularly play other games like GURPS, Warhammer, etc...

Golems, undead and demons are my favorites because I never have to explain how they've survived in the dungeon for 1000 years with no food source or why they wanted to attack you the moment they met you.
