[World of Warcraft] Anyone else playing the open beta?

The partying thing seems to work pretty well. Over lunch today, I went to a new area to kill off some lousy human NPCs intruding into our undead lands; while there, I found another guy on the same quest, so we joined up. I died during the fight, but he managed to finish the quest while I was returning to life, and we both reaped the rewards.

Afterwards, I needed help with phase 3 of another quest (tracking down an undead traitor and killing him), but this guy was on phase 2 of that same quest (collecting the soul shackles by which the undead traitor was controlling his minions), so I wandered over and helped him with his part of the quest. Finishing that off took the rest of my lunch break, so I didn't make much progress toward my goals; still and all, it was great fun.

So, is there an ENWorld guild up yet? And if not, shall we start one as soon as the final release rolls around?

would have loved to have taken part... but yet again a company fails to realise the world exists beyond the American shores grrrr..

So for those of you luck S.O.B's that did get in on the fun, how's the game shaping up? whats good or bad about it, what fun features or exciting additions can we look forward to?

How does it compare to over online RPG's?

Neo, they've said that they they had a good reason for doing the beta in NA only:

Blizzard said:
Will there be beta tests in other countries for World of Warcraft?

Yes. There will be additional beta tests for certain languages in Europe and some additional languages in the Asia-Pacific regions.

Why will these beta tests happen after Korea and North America?

World of Warcraft requires both a complex server infrastructure and local GM/support staff to provide the excellent customer service and unparalleled gameplay experience that we intend to deliver. In order to meet these goals, we are taking a very thorough and measured approach to the beta. Our plan for the initial beta test is to resolve any challenges we face prior to extending the beta test to other countries.
Sorry you didn't get to play! And yeah, I'd definitely be up for a guild of ENWorlders, although we'll need to talk with the admins to make sure that's copacetic.

On a similar note, I ran past someone last night in the game named Teflon Billy. Is that a pop-culture reference, or is it our own much-beloved Bill?

D'oh--I knew that! Thanks, Dreeble; given that the guy didn't respond to my "Hey, are you ENWorld's Teflon Billy?" it was probably someone else who was baffled by the question :).

Damn, from all of these comments it sounds a lot like my experience playing City of Heroes. And that's unfortunate.

"Nice eye candy. Great attention to detail."

"Gameplay's not really innovative, just repetitive killing, but at nice fast clip."

"Soloing is possible, and you can log in to do a quest/mission in a short period of time."

That's all stuff I praised CoH for--it's a very streamlined game--but after a couple of months, a character hits a leveling plateau, the quantity of missions available diminishes, and it's just plain ol' grinding.

How about these mini-games I've heard about?

And what about rogues? Can they do anything neat besides sneaking and sneak-attacking?

Felon I had the same reaction. WoW looks great, plays great, but doesnt seem to be anything different. I know Ive been playing only 3 days but I feel like Ive done it all before.

I dont know if I would want to pay 12 to 15 dollars a month, especially when a game like Guild Wars is free and as much fun (for me).

Any way heres some screenies from my dwarf paladin in the Valley of the Kings. Anyone else got some?

What's the deal with Guild Wars? Is it coming out soon? Is it gettng positive buzz? I've heard of the game, but haven't followed it much.

As for WoW, I'm in the stress test, and the game is fun and solid, but I'm not sure I'd pay a monthly fee for it.

Hmm I just got kicked from the WoW server and cant get on.. dont know if the free ride is over or if its my rig.

As for Guild Wars, its a MMO developed by a binch of former Blizzard and battle net employees. It looks good, has no monthly fee (supposedly the game will generate content by releasing expansions). The game is geared toward guild and competitive gameplsy, but the developers have content for solo and Player vs Environment groups.

The game is very much like a single player experience in that you have a character, level it gain skills, craft etc..However, whenever you quest, you have to choose 4 and only 4 skills before leaving the city zone. Also if you wish to travel to a zone you simply click on a spot on the map and youre there--no long runs. And the quest zones are instanced just for you and your party.

So alot of gameplay doesnt depend on how long youve played, but rather the skills you choose. A lower level player could defeat a higher level one if hes got the right skills.

It may work or may not, but the ideas the devs are putting in are very comendable and perhaps even gasp revolutionary :) .
