Yeah, well, Gigli is rumored to be one of the worst movies ever made. I think that's the difference. Batman Begins seems to be doing quite well so far, and we have every reason to suspect that War of the Worlds will as well.
I think this weekend will tell, if it does 24 million , it has life but if it is 12 or less it will be interesting to see. This weekend it goes against three movies, a date movie in Bewitched, a horror (guy) movie in the Land of the dead, and a family movie in Herbie, then next weekend War of the Worlds, it could take a beating at the box office, if it was just one of those, maybe two, it would be strong but all three... :\

Hmmm... Well, I hope that Christopher Nolan signs back on for the sequel and the third movie. The last rumor I heard was that the next film, if Dave Goyer has his druthers, would feature The Joker as the villain with Harvey Dent as an ally to The Batman and Gordon. The Joker would be captured at the end of the film to return in the third movie at which time he'd be the one to scar Dent's face, paving the way for Two-Face (which makes sense... It's the sequel to the sequel).

As for casting, again the rumors for Dent have been consistent with Guy Pearce in the role (brilliant casting if you ask me). Others that could do a good job with the character would be Ewan McGregor or Jude Law. James Mardsen would do well, too. Essentially, any incredibly good looking, young guy with gravity is what you want.

As for The Joker, I've always thought that Jim Carey, in the hands of a strong director, could do the role justice. The Joker is supposed to be funny as well as an incredibly evil sociopath. Carrey has the build and the face for it (remember how he looked in The Mask?). However, there were rumors that Lachy Hume was the front runner. The guy certainly looks like The Joker, although I can't for the life of me remember what how he struck me in the Matrix films.

It was a hit in europe.

RE: D&D
According to Box Office Mojo:
Domestic: $15,220,685 45.0%
Overseas: $18,586,724 55.0%

Not a hit by any description.

Batman receipts have not been what was expected; I've seen one source say that the opening weekend was half of what Warner expected but I have not found confirmation or figures to back that up. I think it all adds up to nine years wasn't enough time to fully remove the stink of Shaumacher's immense bomb from the public mindset. The next one should do much better now that people know what to expect and word of mouth will improve it's take.

It's entirely possible that Batman expectations weren't reasonable, too, though. Personally, my completely uninformed opinion is that Batman will have quite a bit of legs -- word of mouth is almost universally positive, which means it will stay in theaters a long time, and continue making decent money longer than many blockbusters which are often little more than one weekend shows.

I think it'll turn out to have been financially quite successful.

And every time I see Tom Cruise acting like a knucklehead on TV (not that I go looking for it, but it seems to be everywhere), my unqualified enthusiasm for War of the Worlds declines a bit. I can hear my inner voice changing from "This'll be awesome!" to "But what if it's like AI?"
Sometimes I'm quite glad I don't watch much TV. :D

I did see a brief bit on E.T. (my wife's a fan) where he dressed down some idiot reporter who asked him how War of the Worlds tied in to his scientology beliefs. Although he really was quite rude, that actually raised my estimation for him a bit.

Oh, I agree completely. I certainly hope so.

So, anyone want to guess on who they will get for The Joker? Whoever does it will have a very hard time becuse he will automataclly be compared to Jack.

AICN is reportin a rumor that it might be Sean Penn - which I think could be brilliant.

Box Office Mojo has the production costs at $45 million, while the IMDB has it at $35 million. However, BOM doesn't have any advertising cost, it's possible that it was made for $35 million with $10 million for advertising for a total of $45 million. Considering it only made $33,807,409 total, it looks like a loss no matter how you cut it.

However, it's possible it did very well in worldwide DVD sales and TV. It wouldn't be the first time that the video market brought about a sequel. Highlander is a good example.

Or, at least it would be, if they actually made a sequel to that film. But that would be silly. And wrong. Very wrong.

Anyway, getting back to Batman, according to the news section of the IMDB:

British actor Paul Bettany has joined the race to play Batman's nemesis The Joker in a planned sequel to Batman Begins. Director Christopher Nolan left no doubt The Joker would feature heavily in the next Batman installment when the villain, formerly played by Jack Nicholson, left a calling card in the final scene of the box office smash hit. And now Batman fansites are desperately trying to make sure producers pick the right man for the job. Crispin Glover was an early favorite, along with Star Wars' Mark Hamill, who provides the voice of The Joker in the Batman animated series and Aussie actor Lachy Hulme, and now Bettany has got the fans' vote. An insider tells website Batman-on-film.Com that the A Beautiful Mind star is officially in the running to play the evil character.

I'm not familiar with this guy. Is he a good choice?

Paul Bettany was the herald to Heath Ledger's knight in A Knight's Tale, as well as the main friend of Russell Crowe in Master & Commander.

And he's married to Jennifer Connelly (... lucky bastard...)

I manipulated two pictures of possible Jokers, Adrien Brody (still my favorite) and Crispin Glover (hard to find a picture of him with a wide smile, though). Here they are:
