Of course it has nothing to do with Iron man having a magnetic lock on ticket sales. April 25-27, there was not too much to give Speed racer much trouble, but by waiting until MEGAMOVIE-MAY, the Mach 5 has been sideswiped by a drunk driver in a suit of gold and red titainum armor.

I have to wonder what WB was thinking riding the coat tails of Iron Man. The main demographic they don't share is "kids too young for a PG 13 movie." And you know what, I have a hunch a lot of parents decided "Screw it, I'd rather see Iron man"

I'd believe that the studios didn't really bank on Iron Man doing such an amazing job. I mean, its not Spider-Man and there isn't as much appeal beyond those that already know him...so its probably just underestimating things and having no idea how hard Iron Man was going to hit to start things off.

It'll be interesting to see what kind of window Iron Man 2 is given when it comes out.

The problem with that theory is that it had a budget of $ 140 Million. They wouldn't have put that much up (or have spent the $ for a promo for it during the SuperBowl) if they didn't think it would have universal appeal.

Well, yeah. I'm pretty sure Marvel knew what they were doing with it from the beginning...and SEEING it proved that to me.

But it is a possible explanation for it being underestimated by OTHER studios. Lots of big-budget summer movies flop or get overturned the next week by the supposed next big thing.

I'm suprised Redbelt did that well. It was not that good. :(
I went to see it today, and I have to disagree. I really liked it. The story was a complex mix of lies and betrayal with some excellent martial arts fighting without it degenerating into some horrible Blood Sport ripoff.

After the latter Matrix movies and Speed Racer, can we all agree that the Wachowskis were a one-time fluke with the original Matrix?
