D&D 5E Toward a new D&D aesthetics

What is your feeling about the changes in aesthetics of D&D illustrations?

  • I really enjoy those changes. The illustrations resemble well my ideal setting!

  • I'm ok with those changes, even if my ideal setting has a different aesthetics.

  • I'm uncertain about those changes

  • I'm not ok with those changes because it impairs my immersion in the game.

  • I hate those changes, I do not recognize D&D anymore

  • The art doesn't really matter to me either way. I don't buy/play the game for the art.

  • Change in aesthetics? Where? What?

Wait.

What's wrong with this one?

They're camping on a burning mammoth skeleton. How is that light?
There is nothing wrong with it.

They are just chilling at a campfire, the bruiser looking type is reading a book. Another person is making some sparkly cantrip magic absently. Another is roasting a sausage on the fire. You can see a sword is there but not even being carried.

It is just a quiet moment.

I consider that a lighter feel than a lot of D&D art where there is action or people ready for action.

Guys... you are literally doing the thing that the poster is complaining about. Take a step back and think about what you are saying please. The original poster has done nothing to earn the condescending responses you've given. When someone is disagreeing with you, it's not a personal assault. They are expressing a different opinion. You are talking to a human being. First off, take the time to understand what the person you are replying to is saying. In this instance, neither one of you has done that. You are colouring what was said with your own preconceptions and responding accordingly.

Before you reply to me... go back and read what you said. And look at what was said back to you.

For the record, I don't agree with this poster's viewpoint. But I agree to their right to have that viewpoint. I absolutely don't mind this style of art (I don't love it, but it's inoffensive to me). I can step outside of my world view to understand what they are saying and why they are saying it though. I'm asking you to try and do the same.

It's a discussion forum. Where people discuss things. And make claims. And if you make claims, it's commonly understand that you usually have to put forth some evidence so people can be on the same page and further the discussion.

Asking you for examples of what you mean, to demonstrate what you see as a trend, is not looking to frustrate you or start a fight. It is a request for information to understand.

These are discussion boards. It is reasonable for folks to expect you to want to actually discuss opinions you express.

@Voadam - yeah, I can see what you’re getting at, and I think it’s the palette that gives it that “bright” look. It’s not so much that it isn’t scenes before, but the color, crispness and quite often the individuals in the picture that’s different that what we’ve seen before.

Thats what I'm talking about.

Contrast that with this? Or anything else being splashed with vast amounts of Blue/Purple/Pink digital ink?
