It would be interesting to see under what rationale people call it "junk".

I have no idea. I'm only familiar with it by description. I was just noting that things other people--or even the person at hand--consider the equivelent of "junk food" can still be something they quite enjoy. I've had both movies and TV shows that I recognize are objectively kind of junk, but still just landed right with me.

This is The Voice for me. It is vapid and probably rigged, but nothing brings me joy on a rough night like a 4 chair turn.

But it represents something in the setting, so it can't be meta.
I strongly disagree with this one.

If it represents something in the setting, but the character is using it subconsciously; whilst the player is using it consciously that disconnect between player and character decision making means it's still meta. If it's activation for the character is purely subconscious, then to make it not meta, the player cannot decide when to use it. It would need to be triggered, possibly with both trigger conditions (which can be vague) followed by a % chance it goes off. in a way that the character's subconscious would allow.

And then maybe you accidentally devour the soul of your friend because in an argument he pulls a gun on you. (whoops)
