Why don't you just try telling your DM? Ask him that, occasionally, you guys may try to (naturally) step out of your cramped play pen to explore alternative solutions or entire adventures...and the answer shouldn't always be that you die for your creativity. Good DMs are malleable and (should)...

I've already got my own counter-organizer, maddman! I use a bead sorter, it's got 24 compartments which is quite enough...although it can't hold anything greater than 5' by 10' counter.

ad hoc it! It really is best just to ad hoc all XP anyway. If people complain that you are giving them too little (or for some weird reason too much), just tell them to stop meta-gaming! XP is yours to hand out, and if you want to give them enough to gain more than a level you can. I say "feh"...
