D&D 4E House Rules for Old School 4e

A large part of our last gaming session involved airing out what bugged us about 4e after playing it for 18 months. One of the comments was that there are no 'quick' combats anymore. I mentioned to the player that while I agreed with him on that, the reason is that earlier editions involved...

Disappointed in Dungeon, at least for adventures.

I was going through a bunch of 15 year old Dungeon magazines and I realized how much the current version pales, at least as far as variety of adventures go. Yes, we have some more content, but it's stuff that was originally in Dragon. Chaos Scar looks good, but so far they've only had a ton of...

House Rule - Changing Dazed and Stunned

One of the problems with higher level play is the prevalence of powers and monster abilities that result in Dazed or Stunned conditions. PC's hate it. DM's hate it. They're annoying and result in combats getting longer. Critical Hits mentioned this in their blog entry today: Critical Hits »...

House Rule - No Aid Other in Rituals

One of my peeves in higher level rituals is that it becomes trivial for aid another to work (since the DC is a static 10). This makes higher level Diseases of Afflictions trivial to remove. One solution I see is to just eliminate the Aid Another option from Rituals. Another solution is to...

    Eberron Epic Tier

I wish there was more help on running Epic Tier campaigns, but I suppose that's DMG3 material. Still, our group is about to get into the Epic Tier and I'm trying to come up with a good arc. The PC's, through their actions, have eliminated the possibility for Tiamat to be released, and that...

The Magic Items that WotC cannot publish

Whoops! Browser Settings Incompatible I disagree with him. I'd certainly buy a 'cool Magic Item' book. It could be a book on 'Lesser Artifacts'. The items wouldn't be full on Artifacts, but still could be controlled by the DM. At the very least, it's worthy of a DDI article.

    Skather, Dragonborn Ninja

Skather originally shows up in Red Hand of Doom, and he annoyed the crap out of my players. So I brought him back for the big campaign that just ended, becoming a recurring villain. Great fun. :D He finally bit it in the big campaign finale on Friday, but in another forum I had a request...

Epic ending combat to 16-level campaign.

The setup: The current Eberron campaign has been going since 4e came out. The campaign has significantly featured a recurring villain, Skather, the dragonborn ninja. He has been driving the PC's nuts for not just one, but two campaigns (he is featured in Red Hand of Doom and really annoyed the...

Pennant of Heaven's Armies - I Win Button?

Is it just me or is the 16th level Invoker utility power Pennant of Heaven's Armies too powerful? I realize it is a daily, but having a conjuration that is sustained with a minor action and grants allies in LOS a bonus (not even a power bonus) to all defenses equal to the caster's Wis bonus too...

    Balancing a long combat

I'm wanting to run a long combat as descibed in the DMG2 as the final encounter in the current campaign. It'll involve an Aspect of Tiamat, a ninja that has caused the PCs fits in two campaigns, a horde of draconians, and a skill challenge to destroy the teleportation circle the enemies are...

D&D 4E What are the coolest magic items in 4e?

One comment that comes up (and one I agree with) is that magic items have kind of lost their thrill. However, there much be some cool items out there? Any nominations for the coolest magic items in 4e so far?

No secrets can be kept due to Consult Oracle?

Is it just me, or does the Consult Oracle ritual basically make it impossible to keep any secrets once anyone can cast the dang ritual? All it requires is one person, alive or dead, to have known the answer to the question. Like (warning, Eberron spoiler) Is King Kaiuss III a vampire...

Environmental hazards and features in cities?

Does anyone have any ideas for good environmental hazards or features that could be used in city combat encounters (ie in the streets?). In particular the city I'm having to deal with is Stormreach in Eberron, but while there seem to be good examples for wilderness or dungeons there don't...

    Titan Shell - Flexibility ruling

This came up in Friday's game. The Titan Shell has a power called Flexibility (at will; immediate interrupt, when the titan shell would be immobilized, restrained, pushed, pulled or slid) - The titan Shell makes a saving throw. On a save, the triggering effect is negated and the titan shell can...

4e Annoyances for those who like 4e

An interesting thread about what people like about 4e. But something that I think might be more interesting is what people, after playing for a year, find annoying about 4e...yet otherwise they love it. 1. Too many damage modifiers, especially conditional ones. Where previous editions had...

Did an experiment last night with an 'easy' encounter.

Well, was planning on two experiments last night...one using Sly Flourish's 4e Hard Mode suggestions from his blog (Sly Flourish» Blog Archive » Dungeons and Dragons 4e: Hard Mode). The other was to see how a combat of a lower level would go against the PCs...who are 15th level. They went up...

    Dark Sun Revised vs. Original

Okay, I DM'ed Dark Sun with the Original Set and was out of D&D entirely when the Revised Set came out. So my question is what parts are so objectionable in the Revised Set? I've heard about the issues with killing off the Dragon and half of the Sorceror Kings...but what about the...
