D&D 5E New Players same level as Current Players?

Percentage? It's pretty random, but maye 15%. I play a very sandbox style campaign world where characters can easily get in over their heads if they aren't careful. I don't generally "end" a campaign and continue to roll with the changes to the world. While our 5th edition campaign has been in...

D&D 5E New Players same level as Current Players?

Same here. Not giving XP for missed sessions isn't a penalty. If the player is really focused on gaining XP for some reason, I will allow someone who will miss a session to have their character played by another player or by me, with the normal potential for character death.

    D&D 5E How would you incapacitate/knock-out a skeleton?

I'd kill it. Then have them complete some ritual with the bones to bring it back to life. Provide some clues that this is a possibility, or they might not think of it.

D&D 5E New Players same level as Current Players?

I've discussed it with the players before. They prefer to have actually developed a character all the way from beginning to end. They strongly identify with their characters and starting at higher level is like skipping the first half of a good book. Shoehorning is not so much referring to...

D&D 5E New Players same level as Current Players?

Everyone starts at first. My players ALWAYS have multiple characters they switch in and out of use so levels are all over the place all the time. This session "Bob" may be playing his 16th level paladin and next session he may be a level 3 rogue. I've never seen anything to be gained by...

D&D 5E New Players same level as Current Players?

We let them sit at the table now. It was too hard to hear through the door.

D&D 5E What are the Dark Powers?

I think it is a mistake to define what they are. Ravenloft is about fear. “The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown” - H.P. Lovecraft

[UPDATED AGAIN!] CURSE OF STRAHD Will Be Available March 15th

Curse of Strand? I think you have a typo. Here's hoping they get it right. Setting Ravenloft in the Realms would be an awesome way to f* it up.

    D&D 5E 3d6 in Order

I still do this from time to time. I think it is more fun than picking your scores.

D&D 5E How do the races breed?

I'm not sure anyone can give you anything more than speculation once you go beyond the documented elf plus human = half elf, orc plus human = half orc. I doubt biology would offer much help either, since none of these things exist except for humans. I'd just use your imagination and have fun...

    Dragonborn in Faerun

Morphology may not mean everything but it still plays a part, even if only in the unconscious minds of the players. Dwarves are indeed a bit mysterious. We at least know that elves interbreed with humans, and halflings have human-like families and communities. Dwarves may be odd but still...

D&D 5E 101 things to say or do when you fail your pick-pocket check

    1) Palm a small dead very poisonous bug and when caught claim "This was on your shirt good sir!" 2) Yell loudly "What have you done with the talisman?! I saw you put it in your pocket! You gave it to her, didn't you!", and then run out of the room.

    Dragonborn in Faerun

That's all well and good, but eventually you need to come up with something more substantive and then it gets weird. What would Xorn culture be like? They don't wear clothes. They don't even eat oragnic material. Would they even have buildings? Would they have a concept of currency, and what...

    Dragonborn in Faerun

You certainly seem to dislike Gygax's approach to D&D. I'm not saying everything he wrote is gospel or anything like that, but there are valid points in there. The whole section rambles a bit and so I tend to read it as a disconnected stream of conciousness thing, which is probably how it was...

    Dragonborn in Faerun

Sure, although first and second edition had level limits for demi-humans because the game really was geared towards human characters. The first paragraph is definitely about powerful monsters as characters and concerned with balance, but I think it is a mistake to write off the rest of the...

    Dragonborn in Faerun

The beginning is about playing powerful monsters, yes. The rest of the section is more general advice.

    Dragonborn in Faerun

It's a shame you didn't read further. I quoted the entire section because I think it is interesting, but the parts further down were particularly relevant. Gygax's observations about players wanting to play dragons, demons, and the like is pretty spot-on in my experience, but starting with the...

    Dragonborn in Faerun

I'm not a big fan of Dragonborn or Tieflings (Tiefling is perhaps the stupidest name for a race I've ever heard). Some of my players like them so I don't ban them but I don't particularly like them. Here's an interesting quote by Gygax from the 1st edition DMG which I agree with and which seems...
