What's your #1 book that you think every tabletop gamer should read? And why?

That's definitely a good choice. It's a book I think every GM should read, at least.

What's your #1 book that you think every tabletop gamer should read? And why?

I'd say if we were making a list of say, the "Top 10 non-gaming books every tabletop gamer should read," that would definitely go on that list. It straddles that boundary--but I think gamers should know a bit about the history of their hobby.

What's your #1 book that you think every tabletop gamer should read? And why?

lol Maybe I should rename this thread: "Appendix O" As in "O! I can't believe you haven't this book!" Yet there are some great books out there that help people at least feel "fully human." And those books are worth reading, better than any gaming manual.

D&D 5E Deck of Many Things Preview

WotC could have done much more with this preview, given that they're raising money for the Children's Miracle Network. For the $25,000 fundraiser goal, we get an artifact recycled from previous editions (and not even the whole artifact description) and some recycled artwork from another...

What's your #1 book that you think every tabletop gamer should read? And why?

The only requirement is: The book can't be gaming-related. That is, what book would you recommend that every tabletop gamer should read that isn't a rulebook? Why? Anything from literature, history or other non-fiction is fair game. This is just an experiment. I'd like to see people's...

    Devil worship as a brand

I would market it like TSR did back in the 1980s with AD&D 1e as a "Game of Adult Fantasy" for "Ages 10 and up." Adults wouldn't feel like they're playing a kids game, and teens and pre-teens would feel like their playing something adult. Let the audience themselves chose whether or not they...

    D&D 2E 2E Quickling as a PC.

The closest thing I could find was the Pixie in the Complete Book of Humanoids. To compensate for the pixie's abilities, it takes twice as much experience points for a pixie to gain levels. They also could only have a maximum strength of 14, a constitution of 16, and a wisdom of 16. They can...

    AD&D 2nd Edition Players & Fans Unite!

The Complete Bard's Handbook was one of my favorite books from 2e. Still is.

    AD&D 2nd Edition Players & Fans Unite!

It was work. But I've figured out a couple ways to make it easier. Of course, a lot of the campaign setting material published did a lot of the work for you. Faiths & Avatar, IMO, was a bit over-powered though. The next time I run a 2e game, I'll the player who wants to run a specialty priest...

    AD&D 2nd Edition Players & Fans Unite!

Who cares about AD&D 2nd Edition? I do. But it seems hard to find other 2e fans out there. There's a pretty strong 2e group on Facebook., and there's a great little community on Google+, yet there are days when I like we're scattered to the four winds. Let's changed that. AD&D 2e players...

2nd edition Thief Assassin kit and poisons

Save or die can be vicious, but its also a good learning tool to be more careful in the future as a player. A gracious DM would give a decent onset time.

    Favorite 2e modules?

Favorite 2e adventure? Return to the Tomb of Horrors. I've never ran anybody throught it, but at the very leasts its a good read. But I really wish they'd put old issues of Dungeon Magazine up on D&D Classics or in some format like the old Dragon Magazine archive.

Module WG11: Puppets -- Your experiences?

Both of those modules are gems. I've run most of the adventures in A Hero's Tale. My players found them pretty challenging--especially the Ettercap nest. If your players don't like the idea of becoming orcs, The Silver Key can still be used--perhaps somehow combined with the Patriots of Ulek...

Module WG11: Puppets -- Your experiences?

I'm reviewing both the good and the bad from the period. I've quickly figured out that any adventure dealing with Bruce & Jean Rabe is suspect. This includes Child's Play, and the Terrible Trouble at Tragidore. I can't speak for The Vale of the Mage or Swamplight, the other two modules that I...

Module WG11: Puppets -- Your experiences?

So I made the mistake of devoting time to review WG11: Puppets, by Vince Garcia and Bruce Rabe over at d20 Dark Ages. "Surely," I thought to myself, "the module can't be that bad. There must be something salvageable." I give this module a big thumbs down, but I realize that I'm biased toward...

1 hp, a weapon (of sorts), no armour, no feats, no spells, and 4 cp.

Last year I ran a West Marches-style campaign taking the the Funnelling System from DCC and using it in S&W. It was a lot of fun despite 40+ PC deaths among a dozen or so players. A lot of those characters only had 1 hp. Some survived to get character levels. Although the campaign folded, I...

D&D 2E Tell Me the Story Behind the AD&D 2e Fiend Folio Monstrous Compendium Appendix

Does anybody know the reason why TSR used the RPGA Network to help create this version of the Fiend Folio? Cheap/free labor? Did TSR hope to make a quick buck by slapping "Fiend Folio" on a bunch of leftover monsters? It just seems odd that the Kamadan featured on the front cover isn't even...

New term: "crunch dark age." :heh:

    D&D 5E What Should We Call Next/5e

"The World's Most Popular Role Playing Game." You know, to avoid lawsuits and stuff like that. :p

If you heard the term "crunch renaissance"...

I immediately think of some sort of cereal making a comeback--something like King Vitamin, where its very crunchy, even tasty, but tears apart the insides of your mouth. A negative.
