The writing is really hit or miss, but I think that can be said of any show really.

There's a lot of replica costume pieces out there, such as on ThinkGeek. You can buy the Doctor's fez, bow tie, and of course, coats. Plus Captain Jack's. There's a market for dressing like the Doctor, hence the revelation of his new "look" rather than leaked photos from the set.
So it seems a bit like an ad to have him wearing brand name clothes and mention those names. He's hit just in boots but "Doc Martens" (which takes me back to junior high). It's just any coat but one you can buy from a luxury coat store for £800.
