Spoilers Doctor Who 2024 (spoilers)

We made it through the last of the Tennant Episodes last night. It has been a while since I have seen those. The switch to HD is pretty impactful (there is that pre-HD haze over the screen of the first four or so seasons, which in some instances enhances viewing some it detracts).

Some thoughts:

I love the Timothy Dalton appearance as Rassilon. He has long been my favorite James Bond, I always like seeing him show up in character roles (he had one of the best in Hot Fuzz). Here he isn't on screen that much but he absorbs all of your attention.

I feel like the End of Time is kind of odd in places as a finale. There are moments and scenes I like but the story didn't land as well overall as some of the other send outs. However I think dramatic moments work (though my wife did complain once or twice about the amount of drama: again this is her first time seeing the show). I also liked the chemistry between Wilf and the Doctor.

The part where the master turns everyone human on the planet into himself has never felt right to me (something about it just raises too many questions in my head and disrupts my suspension of disbelief or something). This time around it was the same. I think it also makes earth feel incredibly small.

This time around I noticed way more I, Claudius elements than before. Obviously there is Derek Jacobi as the master, but the stuff like the drum beats are right out of John Hurt's portrayal of Caligula. The masters look too. It is pretty apparent but didn't pick up on these the first time around.

The Waters of Mars really holds up.

I think that if they're bringing back old villains AND are going with the Pantheon of Discord as major villains that the Gods of Ragnarok (from The Greatest Show in the Galaxy) will show up again.

Their whole deal is they're easily-bored entertainment junkies who destroy people the moment they tire of their acts (representing both Doctor Who's audience and the executives who decide if it gets canceled or not) which is just as relevant as ever.

I think they're what were referred to as "the threefold deity of malice and mischief and misery" by Sutekh's Harbringer.

I don’t really know how to say it another way but what you’re describing is just speculation. But it doesn’t matter.

That is fair. All I was really trying to say is people should read the article on their own and make sense of it for themselves

I myself haven't seen this season yet because emotions are so high around it. My plan now is if my wife ends up wanting to stick with the show, we will either buy the season on Amazon and watch it if Disney makes it available for purchase or do a week of Disney to watch it

Trying to bring this topic back on track, I finished watching "Season 1" (Series 14) the other day and, I must say, I like it! SO much better than Whitaker's first series and a return to form narrative-wise in many senses.

Probably the best thing about it is Ncuti Gatwa's performance, which is just so solid and different! It feels like he's made the part his own. Millie Gibson grew on me as the episodes progressed, culminating on "73 Yards", when I fell in love with her as a companion. The scene on the football field was very emotionally charged and she NAILED all of it, from the regret she expressed to Julia (?) to the tension and joy in using the thing to her advantage for the first time.

My favorite episode overall is "Dot and Bubble". It made me cry so much by the end and shocked me to the core. And its message's so relevant and important today, more than ever! Definitely powerful stuff.

I'm patiently awaiting now "Season 2" (Series 15) and just happy to see where RTD and co. will take us with The Doctor now that the new ensemble has been established.

well the article is talking about a season that you admitted you haven't watched which would be about the same as commenting on an article about 5th edition D&D if I hadn't played 5th edition at all.

But I don't play 5E and still follow the media coverage and discussions about it. I am pretty clear when I post thought on what I can't weigh in on (I haven't said anything about whether this season is good or bad). And I have an interest in the topic as I am a fan (I just need to catch up a couple of seasons). For what it is worth, this discussion has made me want to give the Disney episodes a fair watch, and adjusted some of my pre-conceptions from some of the online buzz.
