10 level or 20 level?

There are three things to consider:
1. Will multiclassing be unrestricted? Modern adopted the 'no penalties' rule for multiclassing.
2. Will Advanced Classes and Prestige Classes be available?
3. Will the players use all of this?

Personally, I like the 10 Levels dynamic, if the answer to all three above questions is 'yes'.

I like the 10 level class but never liked the attribute class from D20 Modern. I saw that Mongoose OGL CYbernet has 10 level classes but sure if that is the only book that does this?

Hi folks,

Just thought that this thread was loosely enough based on a couple of our products that I could use it for a shameless plug :).

We, Malladin's Gate Press, have our own product which uses 10 level core classes. The product is DarkLore, a dark fantasy campaign setting and general toolkit for low magic, dark, heroic fantasy. This product has recieved fantastic reviews here at ENWorld and has even been nominated for a Gamewyrd award.

The approach we have taken is thus: To attempt to take the benefits from D20 Modern and convert them into a suitable format for Fantasy games. D20 Modern is more deadly and character progression is operhaps slower, but with plenty of variety and flexibility on achieving your character concepts. Hence we replaced the D20 Modern core classes with 6 classes, each loosely based on an ability score and more suited to fantasy gaming. The classes are: Warrior (Str), Thief (Dex), Outlander (Con), Scholar (Int), Devout (Wis) and Destined (Cha). We then basically took apart each of the 3.5 base classes features and made the not-too-powerful ones into talent trees. Genrally I think the character system is one of the best bits of DarkLore, and we have recieved a lot of praise for it (slighly embarrassed but proud smile).

We're also planning on taking the same approach with Etherscope, our forthcoming game setting.

I think that the 10 level approach has to be tied to free multiclassing. Players can then create whatever character concepts they like. IMO this is a good thing.

Cheerio,

Ben

Opps :heh: , let me refrase that. I like the 10 level progresson for the classes but never liked it when it is based around an attribute from D20 Modern.

OGL Cybernet is another game that takes the basics of the D20M system but created six basic classes more suited to a dark future kind of game. Each class is loosley based of the attributes but not nearly as closely as teh core D20M classes.

Well I am startignt to see this as 20 level classes is for softcore style setting and 10 level classes are for more gittier style world.

So far this is what I see from two other companies.
Mongoose
OGL: Cybernet - 10 level core class
OGL: Horror - I believe they are 10 level
the others, not sure

Fantsy Flight
Horizon Redline: 20 level core class
Horizon Grim: They use 6 level for the core class
Horizon Virtual: Have not seen much info on this
Horizon Spellslinger: 20 level core class

Sor far most of these with fanatsy elemenst has 20 level and more more of the OGL uses D20 modern mostly.
