2012 (spoilers)

First Post
I put spoilers in the title since I dislike blacking out spoilers in posts. But there won't be many here in this one.

It was a pretty good movie. If you are looking for realism or science plausibility go watch a science documentary or something. This is not that movie nor does it try to be. It comes up with its reason the Earth is doomed and then action happens. It is a typical disaster movie, million upon millions (billions even) people die and landmarks are destroyed in grandiose ways.

The impressive thing for me was the cast. There were supporting cast members that I recognized by face all over the place. No big names but it is a great movie to go "Where did I see him before?"

The movie was fun and entertaining and since it was a midnight showing that's all I was looking for. It doesn't surprise nor does it try to. I'm sure if you think about it you can pretty much write down the major plot points as it follows the format for disaster movies pretty well. :D

I know that a lot of people are rolling their eyes at this one, and I was only interested in the CGI and watching ways that Roland Emerich blows stuff up.

But I read that the cast and acting are pretty good, especially considering the topic and the genre.

I'd agree with that. It's not going to come close to winning any awards for the actors but as far as disaster movies go it was better then most. Heck, I even liked it better then District 9. :D

I quite enjoyed it for the special efx. The story was kinda silly, and the whole thing degenerated at the end, but visually, it was a WOW.

Any latent political messages that you saw?

While I enjoy good relevant allegory, usually it's poorly done.

I felt it was interesting in that there were appearances of characters based off of certain public figures such as Queen Elizabeth II. The governor of California was a former actor who spoke with an Austrian accent, even if they didn't say he was Arnold Schwarzenegger. And I think the female German chancellor was certainly intended to be Angela Merkel, even if she wasn't named.

However the one character in the movie who wasn't anything like his Real World counterpart, was the Italian Prime Minister, who was certainly nothing like Silvio Berslusconi. Which leads me to think that the creators of the movie certainly have something against Berlusconi.

I guess the other amusing thing I found about this movie, was that even though it was about an American everyman trying to save his family, it was a movie where the People's Republic of China save Human civilization from destruction. As if they're trying to justify all those really damaging and disruptive super-projects to build giant dams in China.

(. . .) the People's Republic of China save Human civilization from destruction. As if they're trying to justify all those really damaging and disruptive super-projects to build giant dams in China.

I thought the wink-wink of the movie was that the super-project dams were soft cover for the construction of the arks.
