D&D (2024) 2024 Core rule book changes

Perhaps they don't want to treat artificer with the same level of respect as the other classes, apparently even if given the opportunity.
There is not room for it either. Unless they make it even bigger of course. Likely they just don't think it is a core concept. I agree, but everyone is different and I respect that.

Yeah, it's a curiously "neat" number.
I propose it should be something like one background to fit each of the 12 classes x the 4 elements x The 3 Stooges.

(And if it's not, that's how I'm going to do it anyway.)
In the ‘70s and ‘80s, the magazines had various deadpan efforts at typologies that involved the Stooges as differing types of players. I’m up for a return of that. Also for use of the Mayan cardinal directions - they have six, treating up and down as peers of north, south, east, and west.

Keeps everyone on their toes, creativity-wise.

I don't care how many more there are; I just want them to be better designed. I'm happy with Kobold Press's stuff, and MCDM's stuff, but the Monster Manual has three major kinds of monsters: (a) sack 'o hit points and a stick, (b) sack 'o hit points with spells, (c) sack 'o hit points with legendary actions.
I've not been overly impressed with KP or MCDM's monsters. Conversely, I find the WotC's not as bad as the rep they get; particularly since the MM. Now, none of the monster's are as good as my own...

Which is the whole point of AL - you don't have to ask the DM. Show up at a game day or con and just play. I don't see why you feel compelled to diss something a lot of people happen to take advantage of and find useful.
I'm just not a fan of players forcing themselves into a game because the DM gave up their autonomy for, from what I can see, zero benefit. The DM is running the game, so they should get to decide.

There's no room for the only new class WotC has made for 5e because they're prioritizing art. That's a design and layout choice, and not one I agree with.

Who's forcing anyone? I haven't done AL for a while for a variety of reasons, but I was very active in public games both running and organizing. I met some really amazing people, had a lot of fun playing and DMing. If I decide to run for AL then I'm buying into the system.

That system, by the way, works really well. I'm not stuck with one DM, with one group. I can take the PC I've been playing and sign up for an AL game anywhere. I really loved the variety of players and DMs that I had. It may not be your cup of tea but it works well for a lot of people.

Lol love the pun.

But 144 seems a huge number for backgrounds. Is it a typo, or maybe a two stage thing where each background has two steps with 12 choices each?
Turns out they just gave up on trying to convince people that yes, they really are allowed to customize the example backgrounds, and instead decided to make an example background for every possible combination.

(Yes, I know that would actually be a lot more than 144)
