D&D (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal #1: "Everything You Need To Know!"

Each day this week, Wizards of the Coast will be releasing a new live-streamed preview video based on the upcoming Player's Handbook. The first is entitled Everything You Need To Know and you can watch it live below (or, if you missed it, you should be able to watch it from the start afterwards). The video focuses on weapon mastery and character origins.

There will be new videos on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday this week, focusing on the Fighter, the Paladin, and the Barbarian, with (presumably) more in the coming weeks.

correction, your LG paladin becomes fighter without bonus feats, so basically over glorified commoner.
Well, to be honest, I was thinking more the AD&D version, so, it does depend on what edition you happen to be playing. But, the point is still valid either way. Your LG paladin loses all the Paladin abilities whereas the cleric never suffers any consequences.

heh, true,
not to mention that you are on DMs charity all the way will or will you not have your characters abilities

And it gets worse. Back in the day, paladin's being forced to fall happened more often than it should. But, clerics? Clerics had no restrictions at all. You could murder puppies all day long and it never mattered. Because clerics had no code of conduct at all. So, my LG paladin does X and becomes a fighter. My LG cleric does exactly the same thing and... nothing happens.

It wasn't only that it was unfair to paladin players, but, it was also completely arbitrary as to who it actually applied to. For some bizarre reason, my LG paladin of Pelor had a stricter code of conduct than the High Priest of Pelor. :erm:
In AD&D, a LG cleric committing an evil act would change alignment and thus would have to change deity. Furthermore, clerics who are not exemplar in following the dictates of their deity, might have spells withhold.

Also, paladins are considered the most dedicated champions in AD&D, so it is normal that they have to follow a stricter code than clerics.

that is all fine and well for RP reasons.

But paladins should not be overall more powerful than fighters(as much as D&D can be balanced at least) just because they have some code of conduct to follow.

It's fine if that's what you want, but if I'm dropping $50+ on a book (and I don't really care about art), I want more than that from my plots. At least comics of the era (make mine Marvel) usually had interesting characters.
But you’ve been quite clear you have no intention of buying these books. Or any books by WOTC, and haven’t for a good long while, by my memory. You’ve found other games you prefer.

Nothing wrong with preferring a different style of game! But I’m not sure why you’re arguing that a game you aren’t buying should include mechanics that you want (when you have stated you’re not the target audience anymore for WOTC games).

Meanwhile I'm over here loving that aspect of Paladins, and wishing Clerics and Warlocks via Gods/Patron had some of that mechanical weight and consequence, as a player.

Another side project on the "never to be finished" pile I guess.
While you're at it, make sure druids and rangers appease the gods and spirits of nature, monks uphold their discipline and barbarians hold the fury always in their hearts or else they lose their abilities or no longer can advance in that class.

and fighters must do 1000 pushups daily and punch party members that do not meet the target number also.
