We fluctuate between 70 and 72. I've never quite understood the time boundaries my parents always had around AC/heating, there was always a big to do around whether "it was time" to turn on the heater or AC for the season. I was honestly surprised to learn as an adult there's no procedure beyond setting the thermostat differently.

I'm perfectly happy to determine a comfortable temperature for my surroundings and pay to keep it there. It feels like they were imbuing a certain mysticism to HVAC costs.

The freedom of being the one controlling the pocket book!

Living up north, I think my folks kept the outside AC unit covered in the winter and so they'd need to go uncover it. My big thing recently was getting a thermostat where you just set the AC temp and heat temp and let it go, no switching ever needed.

It would be interesting to see the data on how many single earner vs. two earner households with children were doing in terms of extra money over the years. I know we rarely went out to eat, for example, back in the day, but now that seems omnipresent in the US. Similarly, the number of cars per household felt smaller.

Living in an apartment, I keep mine at 70,while the outside hallways and lobby area is at 65.

EDIT: After spending most of the time between 1994 and 2003 with a swamp cooler, my asthma was happy to finally move into a home with an AC.

We have a heat pump. Idk if it's the same thing. Middle of winter and we set it at 22 celsius I think.

As I understand it, a heat pump is like a reversible air conditioner - can heat the house in winter and cool it in summer. They're becoming more common in the US. The standard over here is still probably an air conditioner that cools in summer and a furnace that heats in winter (they typically use the same blower and duct system inside - the AC condenser is outside, and the either gas or electric furnace itself is inside).

I may be weird. I wear 2-3 layers year round. If it goes beliw 10 Celsius I'll put a beanie on.

Close to 0 Celsius I'll consider a long sleeve jacket.

Tee-shirt, shirt, puffy vest does me from 5 to 15ish above that it's 2 layers.

We don't bother heating the rest of the house or bedroom even if it's-5 outside.

Yup 22 in winter, 18 in summer if it's a hot day.

They don't work so well if it gets really cold. Hard Winters of my youth are kinda gone though. Mild frost vs white outs and I moved to colder part of the country.

1 day a year two years ago.

If I'm cold everyone else is freezing. I don't bother with gloves unless it's alpine area.
