Ooops, I saw that earlier but totally forgot about it! :heh:

That's so cheap! :eek: You're most expensive one is 30p per *GALLON*! :eek:

That's just tax. There's another $2.50/gal = (~GBP 1.23/gal => ~34p/L) or so that's not tax.

Ok, my bad. I'm not on the ball tonight!

So that's 1.50 a gallon. I make that to be 30p per litre. That's still a third of the price.... :eek:

I average, conservatively, 60 gallons of gas per month. So, conservatively, I pay $269.28 per year in gas taxes. Over $2,200 per year, total. As a conservative estimate. Trips to Tucson, Phoenix, Sedona, Flagstaff, and other places would definitely increase that dramatically.

Hmm ... seems clear to me that if I am in Arizona again I should give you a break and drive to visit you rather than you come and visit me! :D

What about other taxes like income tax, property tax, and sales tax -- have you calculated those out to compare? Certain types of taxes seem to hide themselves better than others, or seem less painful. If they didn't tax us at the pump, they'd tax us somewhere else.

Though I could easily be wrong my impression of western Europe is that it has much more public transportation infrastructure than America. That in general a western European would be driving far less distance than the average American is required to in many parts of the country because of different infrastructure development patterns. Outside of the metropolitan areas there is no public transportation at all in large parts of America and infrastructure sprawled making you cover much more distance to get where you need to go.

Example: The nearest place for me to get groceries is fifteen miles(>20km) away, the nearest town almost 30 miles(>45km), the college where I take my graduate courses over 50 miles, the nearest local gaming store a three hour drive on the interstate.
I've heard that the main difference between American and British thinking is that Americans think 200 years is a long time, and Brits think 200 miles is a long ways.

Sales tax is over 8% here. My property taxes ( I am exempt from some) is about $1200.00 per year.

I pay about $32/month in sales taxes, besides gas. So $384.00 in sales tax. Minimum. Excluding any big ticket items I may end up buying.

I'd tell you why taxes are so high here in Illinois...but in the vested interest of not getting banned, I'll hold my tongue. Tax police haven't asked me for their $271 yet...maybe I'll slip through a crack or something,
