I've heard that the main difference between American and British thinking is that Americans think 200 years is a long time, and Brits think 200 miles is a long ways.

Yeah I guess so! 200 miles is extremely far in my mind! 200 years is a long time, but I see what you mean!

My understanding is that gas stations don't make a significant, if any, profit from selling gas; rather, gas stations make a profit from foot traffic into the convenience stores, selling sodas, beer, snacks, candy, and whatnot.

I figure expressing it that way (dividing the total amount by the number of citizens instead of the number of adults or the number of drivers) is just a way to make it seem like a bigger deal than it is -- like the tax police are standing at the end of the driveway asking your 3-year-old for $271.
You really need to stop letting your 3-year-old drive so much!

Yup. I work at a store and its between 5 and 11 cents we make after taxes (per gallon) and the cost of the gas. THEN there is licenceing, testing and other costs involved.

I would travel nearly 200 miles round-trip just to find a FGS. Last week, I traveled 500 miles round-trip for a business trip.

Sales tax is over 8% here. My property taxes ( I am exempt from some) is about $1200.00 per year.

I pay about $32/month in sales taxes, besides gas. So $384.00 in sales tax. Minimum. Excluding any big ticket items I may end up buying.

Man, I need to move to Arizona. Our local sales tax is 7%, but my property taxes are $6000 a year, and that's very low for this area  .

I wouldn't mind so much, but it seems that despite all the taxes, nothing really gets done (roads are poor, police are undermanned, most of the fire departments are volunteer ... maybe the schools are good, but as I don't have kids I can't judge and am not getting the benefit).

You may want to. Even adding in the taxes I am exempt from, my taxes on a $225,000.00 home/property are less than $2,000.00.

15 miles = 24km, 30 miles = 48km, 50 miles is 80 km (5 miles is 8 km, not 3:4)

Yeah that's true of continental Europe as far as I can gather, the cost to got about 50 miles to the nearest 'big' town is about £6, in Belgium its 50p.

That doesn't seem quite right....! What is it per gallon?

I must say I am very dissapointed with public transport in England. It's not nearly as cheap or convenient as many English people on the internet made it out to be before I moved to the UK.

A round trip train ticket to London from Cambridge costs between $25 and $40 US. A train ticket to Scotland can cost over $150. That's more than what Ryan Air charges to fly me to mainland Europe!
