2WF and repeating hand xbows

Could this be done? That is, could I make a fighter who uses a repeating hand crossbow (assuming they could be created) in each hand and fire with both in a round using the 2WF rules?

If I had Rapid Shot, would I get 1 or 2 extra shots per round?

Beyond that, the repeating crossbow described in the book requires 2 hands anyway (1 to hold the stock, 1 to use the lever). I ca conceivably imagine a small version which could be operated by one hand, but it would be significantly smaller than the standard hand crossbow.

Like kreynolds said, TWF does not apply to ranged weapons, but Ambidexterity does.

The penalties for firing a crossbow do not seem to scale with size. A Medium-sized character with Ambidexterity still takes a -6/-6 penalty when firing one crossbow in each hand, regardless of whether it's a light crossbow (Small missle weapon) or a heavy crossbow (Medium-sized missile weapon). Hence, I would rule that the same -6/-6 penalty would apply to attacking with a repeating hand crossbow (assuming it could be created).

Rapid Shot would get you only one extra attack per round at your highest attack bonus, at the cost of an additional -2 penalty to each attack.

But, if you're going to create a repeating hand crossbow (which does not exist in the core rules), why stop there? Create a feat or feats that allow you to negate these penalties: Two Crossbow Shooting, Even More Rapid Shot or whatever.

This may help

I'm toying with a homebrew feat that might be adaptable for you.

Gunfighter (X-bow fighter, whatever)

Prereq: Dex 13+; Two Weapon Fighting; Point Blank Shot

The character may wield a single, light missile weapon in their off hand as though it were a light melee weapon. This means that the character may wield a melee weapon, or another one handed missile weapon, in their preferred hand and use the light missile weapon according to the 2-weapon-fighting rules.

Master Gunfighter

Prereq Gunfighter

The character may now use a light missile weapon in melee without drawing attacks of opportunity.

How do those sound?

I don't like the Master Gunfighter. IMO, using ranged weapons without provoking AoO's is the domain of PrC's or epic feats, not a normal feat you can get at 2nd level (assuming a human fighter, and those feats being fighter feats.)

TWF does not apply to ranged weapons

Where does it say that exactly?

Rapid Shot would get you only one extra attack per round at your highest attack bonus, at the cost of an additional -2 penalty to each attack.

And if I'm using 2 ranged weapons instead of one?

I really don't see this as being unbalancing. For one, a hand crossbow does d4 damage. Even if I had a straight fighter who got 8 attacks per round, I imagine the best he could hope for is 7-12 damage per shot. Compare that to a bow fighter of equal level who had ample prestige classes, feats and equipment to choose from.

Ambidex, 2WF, PBS, Precise Shot, Rapid Shot, EWP: Hand Crossbow, EWP: Repeating Hand Xbow = 7 feats. So a human fighter could pull it all off at 6th level, netting him 5 attacks per round at -4 to each attack. If he had 18 Dex and two +1 weapons, he would attack foes within 30' at +8/+8/+8/+8/+3 (6 BAB, 4 Dex, 1 PBS, 1 Enhancement, -4 total penalty) and potentially do 5d4+5 damage (average 15 damage per round). He spends the 3rd and 4th rounds reloading. So over the course of 4 rounds, he does a whopping 15 damage? I'm quaking in my slippers over here.

At higher levels, I forsee taking some levels in rogue, getting a Rapid Reload feat, Quick Draw, better weapons etc and becoming useful in combat. But I really don't see any reason why this is a bad idea yet.

Thoughts?

Rapid shot gives you only one additional attack.

Don't just see that additional 1d4. See that he could use +5 bolts, and make that a +5 flaming frost screaming shocking acid crossbow (they would transfer these to the ammunition). See that he could make sneak attacks on top of that and get an additional point of damage with point blank shot.

We'd have 1d4 + 1 + 10d6 + 1d6 fire + 1d6 ice + 1d6 sonic + 1d6 electricity + 1d6 acid. That's an average of 56.

And even on low levels, he'd have some bonus dice with sneak attack, the bonus on point blank shot, magical weapons (probably with at least one of the elemental damage types) and probably some magic ammunition, too (with MW or GMW). That would be more than only the 1d4 damage, and it would quickly be a big differance. Then he could deliver poison with each shot....

You see, this one attack does make a differance - especially because it's yet another attack with almost no penalties
