Hate to be picky again but I couldn't do an Imp, 'cause it is tiny and I'm medium, and that isn't within' one size range. So basically mephits are the way to go.

Hey, let's get back to humanoids here. :p

Lycanthropes are a templated creature, and the spell won't allow you to take those forms, even if the creature type remains the same.

In a side note... lycanthroy now affects giants. Fear the storm giant weretiger.

Dang... I was just flipping through the book, and looking at the stat blocks. I didn't realise they were "example" creatures for the template.

Good News from the MMII

Nope. Monstrous Humanoid <> Humanoid.

There are no humanoids in MMII.

Well that just blows that idea. But being an outsider and a caster is still better.

Okay, now a question about spell mechanics:

The MM entry for the Bugbear lists its feats as: Alertness, Weapon Focus (morningstar).

Then later,
Racial Feats: A bugbear’s humanoid levels give it two feats.
So if you use Alter Self to change into a Bugbear, do you gain Alertness and Weapon Focus (morningstar)? It would seem so...

You would gain the weapon focus as a racial feat (I think), but can only use it if you are also proficient in that weapon.
