The worst part is, it stacks with itself. So, if the enemy is helpless, you can just hit him with this three or four times until he's a drooling moron, and I'm sure we can all think of some evil strategies for that scenario.
No, it wouldn't. Even untyped bonuses generally don't stack with a bonus from the same source.

I guess it depends on whether the spell description prohibits it specifically. Otherwise, unnamed bonuses always stack.

It's not about named bonuses/penalties not stacking, it's about two spells of the same type not stacking. They overlap with each other, but only the greatest penalty actualy applies. This is clearly laid out in the PHB. It's kind of like trying to cast multiple resist elements on somebody for the same element.

From the SRD: Stacking Effects: Spells that give bonuses or penalties to attack rolls, damage rolls, saving throws, and other attributes usually do not stack with themselves.
[...]
Same Effect More than Once in Different Strengths: In cases when two or more identical spells are operating in the same area, but at different strengths, only the best one applies.

(This is a condensed version of what it says on PHB page 153).

Note that named bonuses/penalties not stacking is the general case, but there's also a provision for unnamed bonuses/penalties from the same spell not stacking.

Aaah, those were the times! Will those feats be revised, too?

There's no save (nasty). Its an unnamed penalty, so I guess it stacks. (even nastier)

An average of 10 points of ability damage across, without save? No bloody way.

It's not ability damage - it's an enhancement penalty.

Which means that it can be dispelled or removed with a single "minor restoration". It may even be that the various stat booster spells will gain the ability to remove it.

Incidentally - what does the text for the alter self spell say? It may be that it allows humanoid forms with alternative body parts, just like the current one does.

Or does it specifically say the assumed form must be a humanoid creature from the MM? Or refer to the polymorph self spell?

Other changes

Blindness/deafness is now a necromancy.

Endure Elements has become worthless: it now offers a 24 hr protection vs. not too extreme environmental temperature changes. No longer does it offer 5 reduction vs. a specific element.

Resist Energy (formerly resist elements): only offer 10 in stead of 12 prot vs. a specific energy type.

Cheers,
