sorry for the delay, I"m waffling on what kind of barbarian to play. Maybe lots of HP and high damage berserker. Dwarf or human for some extra HP with the toughness feat.

I'm thinking Polarm Master at 4th??

Taking the Wolf totem would be very useful for a large group (giving all the other melee characters advantage) But I find people don't tend to track that kind of thing and forget about it in PbP

I'd tossed around the idea of a drow, using darkness to counteract the advantage people get when I reckless attack...

The Zealot seems pretty unkillable with all its self healing...especially if I go Aasimar. Both Aasimar and drow are a bit difficult for me to find a backstory for.

Does anyone have any experience or advice for making a barbarian? Mostly, I don't want him to be boring.

I've not seen a Zealot in play. They have solid damage output, and if you are struggling for a backstory, I agree that human or Dwarf is easier to individuate, if only because the species doesn't become a substitute for personality. At level 3 Barbs get some cool skill bonuses; I'd lean into that if you can, and choose a background that can benefit from them -- Entertainer, Guide and Sailor would all work, for example.

(And Guide would give you druid magic -- you could fight with a Shillelagh, cast before you begin to rage!)

I really like this idea. Same temple or patron. Creates an instant hook for our characters. I was planning on focusing on melee abilities, and not eldritch blast. If your character is more casting/blasting oriented, we'd be complimentary.

Recently I started writing histories as several short events followed by more recent background. My barbarian had a twist, it is an orc educated by the elves and then changed (from 2014 --> 2024)

You can read it here: Lunn Dornuk

This format seems to work well (at least for me) because you set the situation and it helps develop the character in depth when you see how he/she/it would react in stressful situation.

That said, "boring" is subjective - give him a goal, a trait, habit or mannerism that can be weird and occasionally affect play, but for which you have strong story for.
