D&D 5E 5e Warlock

I don't have my copy yet, what is the different from this version than previous version? Does the 5e version still the Eldritch Blast which was the main ability I liked? From the preview Warlock now get spells and along with Invocations? I was a bit confused when I saw the preview about that.
Quick summary:

  • Warlocks get cantrips (0-level spells that can be cast at will). Eldritch blast is a warlock cantrip. So you can get it if you want, but you don't have to.
  • Warlocks also get invocations, which are special abilities unique to the class. Some invocations are always-on or usable at will, while others are usable daily. Examples include Devil's Sight (you can see in darkness, including magical darkness); Agonizing Blast (beefs up your eldritch blast damage); Sculptor of Flesh (cast polymorph once/day).
  • Finally, warlocks get spells. You only have a couple of spell slots, but their level increases up to 5th level as you level up, and you regain them after a 1-hour rest. Warlocks have their own spell list. When you reach level 11, you start to gain additional 1/day spell slots usable for spells of 6th level and higher.
  • You have three options for your warlock patron: The Archfey, the Fiend, and the Great Old One, corresponding to 4E's fey pact, infernal pact, and star pact respectively. A variety of options are listed for each (including, to my amusement, Great Cthulhu as an option for the Great Old One). Each patron offers access to some special spells and class powers.
I have to admit the class design feels inelegant to me, what with the two different kinds of spell slots, cantrips and invocations, etc. I'd have preferred the class be a bit more streamlined. However, having built a warlock, I'm pretty impressed with the results. The class really nails the feel of the warlock; half spellcaster, half supernatural being.

Eldritch Blast is still there - it's a cantrips meaning At Will. It's also something that wants two invocations to use properly - Agonizing for Cha to damage (and you get multiple rays) and whatever the 10' push is. At that point your baseline combat offence is near an archer fighter and you have spells. You also have Invocations that allow things like Disguise Self At Will or Silent Image At Will as well as a few spells that aren't on your list. And two spells per short rest
 

I've never played a warlock before, so I made one for my first D&D 5.0 character - we play tomorrow for the first time, so I'm very interested in how this works out.

So far, it's an interesting set of implications from your abilities and The Pact.

The idea that you always are using the highest spell slot available to you is pretty neat. Warlocks obviously are used to cause as much devastation as possible, since every bit of magic you learn is like a firehose turned to maximum, all the time.

I'm using the pact this way: Whatever it is that granted me power is also basically living inside me; kinda my own personal god. It wants to explore the world, and it uses me to do that. It gives me power, and then, sometimes, I have to do stuff for it. I basically give the GM carte blanche to have my character do pretty much anything when he decides that needs to happen.

Many times all it wants is to eat a really spicy meal, or get drunk, or roll in that nice patch of grass.
Sometimes it wants to know what it's like to be deathly sick, or poisoned.
Sometimes it wants to know what it's like to kill a man.

So... should be interesting.
