8th Level Sorcerer needs new spell

I have an 8th level sorcerer that wants to swap out a 1st level spell (Ray of Enfeeblement) which simply has done very little for me in the campaign. I currently have chill touch, shocking grasp, mage armor, and corrosive grasp for 1st lvl spells. I was hoping for something more battlefield tactical than just a plain attack/damage spell. I would like something that I can alter slightly (if needed) to give the effect some color (literally) since he has rainbow/prismatic thing going on.

What 1st level spell suggestions do you have? I do have the PHB, SC, CA, and CM books.

Any ideas for a homemade 1st level spell?

Mount.

It sounds funny, but it's a great sorcerer spell- it's like a combined shield, haste, summon monster that you just have to get creative to optimize.

Silent Image?

you can get really creative with that.

Downside: you have to get really creative with that, and you need (some) DM cooperation to make it work for you.

I would personally keep Ray of Enfeeblement, one of my personal favorite spells.
But looking at your other first level spells I would say maybe go with shield with those all being touch spells, unless you have spectral hand to deliver them with. If so you might talk to your Dm about making either a sonic or fire version of the other grasp/touch spells at 1st level.

Having Chill Touch, Shocking Grasp, and Corrosive Grasp all known is redundantx3.

I'd keep Ray of Enfeeblement and swap out Corrosive Grasp for Nerveskitter (SpC) or True Strike.

Then I'd swap out Chill Touch for something. Then Shocking Grasp.

I will keep Ray of Enfeeblement. If your PC is a sorcerer, you can apply Empower Spell metamagic feat on the fly and it is very, very effective. Even at 15+ level campaign.

Then,, I will dump one of those touch attack spells and take Grease.

Conjuration spell with no save. You can either use it to create slippery area or target opponent's weapon and let it drop. This is one of few ref-save SR=No spell.

Sorcerers should enjoy using metamagic feats to maximize one's limited spells known. Empower spell and Heighten spell feats are so useful for sorcerers.

The sorcerer PC in a game I ran got great mileage out of benign transposition. She used get herself or others out of grapples (swap the grappled with someone who could escape -- favorite target was whoever had freedom of movement at the time), use it swap out flankers (e.g., the rogue could tumble in to someplace nasty, then the sorcerer could transpose rogue w/someone who could withstand the nasty), and so forth.

I'd dump Shocking Grasp if it were up to me. I hate Touch spells, because they require going places where a magic-user does not belong -- specifically, going within reach of the enemy.

Replacements include:
- Silent Image: depends a bit on how the NPCs in your world react to illusions, but very flexible.
- Mount: it detects traps! it provides cover! it blocks doors! it carries stuff! There are few spells more useful than Summon Unlimited Disposable Ponies.
- Grease: if your DM uses terrain, this allows you to reshape the battlefield. Not very useful in a 20 ft. square room, but exceptionally potent someplace with a staircase or rigging, like a castle wall or a ship.
- Benign Transposition: another truly excellent battlefield owning spell.

Cheers, -- N
