9th Level Spell Choices

Subotai

First Post
Alright, so my gnomish sorceress just made level 18 and has in turn received her first 9th level spell. My spell choices thus far have turned her into pretty much a roaming sherman tank (without all of the armor). To go along with this trend I could go for the awesome power of the Meteor Swarm but I am also tempted by Wish as well as some other notable ones (imprisonment).

Basically, I am looking for suggestions on what spell to take. What do you guys think?

If I do choose Wish, what are the limitations that are set on it? How dangerous is it to use? Treat me like a newbie for I am a little slow when it comes to rules. Thanks.

Wish depends solely on the DM. The limitations are spelled out very well in the spell description. But it's the DM that either will take your wishes literally or with a grain of salt. Personally, I'd go with something besides wish as your first spell. Wish is great, and versatile, but you might want something with a puch. Meteor Swarm is just that. I'd pick up wish next level or at level 20.

Gate is a powerful choice. Not only will you have loads of offensive power (summon Solars, Pit Fiends, whatever) but you'll hugely increase your sorceress's versatility. In essence, you'll have access to any spell that a creature in the Monster Manual has...for the limited spell selection of a sorceror this is crucial.

Gate it a good choice, depending on your DM. Some DMs enforce that Gated creatures might come back after the spell is over and teach your character a lesson...not exactly a good thing.

Timestop is a very nice 9th level spell as well :)

Hey, it can be a good thing...fight the angry creatures you previously Gated by Gating in more, and watch the XP and treasure roll in! :D

If you want the ultimate in firepower sure to cheeze of your DM and make him make some new house rules, take shapechange.

Free action to change form, any form including objects only limit can't be more than 200' on a side. Quick question how much damage does a mage do to everyone within a 100' when he turns into a slab of rock 200' on a side and falls down to the gorund from 10' above where he was merily hovering a moment before as a fly.

I'm sure someone can point you to a weights table, but I suspect that 1 cubic foot of rock probably comes in around 100lbs. 8,000,000 cubic feet would therefore be what 800,000,000 pounds 1d6 for every 200 lbs+1d6 for every 10' fallen. So from a 10' drop you'd do 4,000,001d6 in damage. OUCH

It's even worse it you use my figure of 157 pounds/cubic foot: 6,280,001d6 damage!

What books is you DM allowing? Relics and Rituals, Magic of Faerun, Spells and Spellcraft, Book of Eldritch Might? Any of these or just in the PHB?

He is allowing Tome and Blood, and Some of Faerun (depends on the spell. i.e. He did not allow Ball Lightning). I am pretty sure that he would treat Relics and Rituals the same way, allowing it if it is not too powerful a spell.
