A few questions about Chain Spell

yes but since the split rays feat is in the same book and same section as the chain spell feat I think it is logical to assume that the same lets call it misused terminology of split ray is used in chain spell.

Then why even have a Split Ray feat at all?

Am I the only one who thinks that Chain Spell would be worth taking eventually for most casters even if it ONLY affected buffs?

At L15, a 7th level spell slot gives the entire party +5 weapons with plenty of ammo and backup to spare, and it lasts 15 hours.

Well, no.

The point is, that Chain Spell seems to be intended for offensive use, and as you rightfully claim, its highest use is with the buff spells, which just seems wrong (considering, that the limitations set within the feat description only mention offensive uses (limits to damage dice and saves))!

I can't deny that they use identical phrasing in the Split Ray feat and the Chain Spell feat. I have to admit that it seems that they intended that you be able to chain a Ray spell, although I think that is a bit overpowered.

I still don't believe that Ray spells actually have a "target" as defined in the PHB, but that does not seem to be how they are using the term in T&B.

I will have to playtest it before I decide if it really is overpowered or not.

There are very few Ray spells that I don't see how it'd make it Overpowered.

Ray of Enfeeb.
Searing Light.
Ray of Frost.
Disintegrate.

The last would be a 9th level spell. Now, I donno about you, but for a 9th level spell, I think it SHOULD have a kick to it. A 6th level Searing Light chain isn't going to be that scary (5d8 to the first target, and 2d8 to the arcs). Ray of frost? C'mon. As for Enfeeblement, we've seen the effects there.

Try searing light against a group of undead or better yet, vampires. And there are several ray spells from other sources.

And if it affects Ray spells, it would logically also affect Energy Missile spells that shoot a single missile.
