A Monk, a Wizard, and a Swordmage Walk into a Fallcrest; a 4e Story Now game

SARIEL AND STARN

3 SC, Level 2 (DCs 9/13/20)
Goal: (3 Successes) Secure an audience with the Lord and Lady of Fallcrest. (5 Successes) Suss out the presence of malign fey influence in Fallcrest and convince the rulers to lend aid to Starn's ingress to the Septarch Tower and in Sariel's search for his missing brother.

2/8 Successes/0 Failures/1 Hard DC Available/2 Secondary Skills Available/2 Advantages Available/Primary Skill Training exhausted; Diplomacy, Intimidate

After a few moments wait within the spartan chamber of the stone palisade for Sariel and Starn, the pair hear the sound of the interior door to the bailey unbar and open. The ample, meaty hands of Garrison Commander Edmunds take the left glove off her hand and then the right as she regards the pair of heroes.

"A Wizard. And one with knowledge of the events at The Tower of Waiting. You'll come with my platoon of infantry and engineers to survey the sight." (1)

She initially scanned over to Sariel, but the chamber is rather dark and her eyes hadn't adjusted from the light of the mid-day sun. Actually seeing him now, the huge woman pauses abruptly...nearly startles, in fact.

"Last night, one of your <she points> kin ensorcelled my men on her way to speak to our Lord and Lady. And I don't mean 'by beauty.' I mean she put the <her hand makes a vague, sorcery pantomime> juju on them. By the Gods, Elder Spirits, and Primordial alike, she got all the way there and had an audience with the Lord and Lady of Fallcrest."

Her eyes narrow hard at Sariel.

"She didn't turn out to be...but she could have been an assassin." (2)

One more success for your audience.

Commander Edmunds is inclined toward "you're coming with her to the tower." You have to move her off that (1). MEDIUM DC

Further still, she's very much uncomfortable with Sariel, given what went down yesterday. You're going to have to cement her trust (2). HARD DC

You have to deal with both, but you've got options. You can:

* Tackle both of those as Primary Skills and eat into the total tally (therefore, you'd be at 4 remaining successes in your audience with the Lord & Lady if you'd like...unless you wager an Advantage vs # 2 and succeed...then you'd be at 3 remaining successes). DCs are as above.

* You can turn one of them into Secondary Skill moves. That would turn the move to the LOW DC and buff the move for the other. The penalty for failure of a Secondary Skill move is -2 forward as always.

* Failure at # 1 means she rebuffs you and the partial squad of Guards within and she press in. If you don't go with them, we're talking a Level +0 (even money vs you 2) combat encounter vs 4 Minions and 1 Standard inside the palisade wall. Its not a lethal combat. Basically a show your mettle combat. Win and you gain audience w/ the Fallcrest Lord and Lady while Commander Edmunds and her platoon head off without you. Fail and accrue another micro-Failure in the challenge + gain a Bad Reputation Disease (condition). The stage 1 condition is -1 penalty to Diplomacy/Intimidiate/Streetwise checks and the progression check at each Extended Rest is either (a) a Diplomacy check to earn Fallcrest's trust (with some relevant fiction) or (b) 1/10 magic item value (some form of charity & goodwill which auto-succeeds).

I'll then change the situation-state with the entire platoon assembled and ready to go. One of you will have to go with them (which I'll give you a success for that so the other will be granted an audience), or things escalate.

* Failure at # 2 is going to bring Sariel's sister onto the scene. Feather's amongst the rank and file of the guard and Commander Edmunds are extremely ruffled. I'll gain an extra HARD DC in the challenge and I'll be using it right now to escalate things.

Sariel turns to Commader Edmunds and softens in his approach.

"It would be my conjecture that by juju you are referring to my sister likely speaking the word of respite. If so, I apologize on her behalf. For us Eladrin, who reside in the heart of the world, speaking the words of creation is like breathing. Particularly for those of us who descend from noble lineages. It is likely my sister has not studied the cultural norms of mortals which I am guessing would treat such as an affront."

"I myself am quite curious what would bring her here. Nevertheless it was her right to seek the hospitality of your lord. I am certain if you check your annals, you will see visits from my father roughly every 250 years and records indicating an accord of hospitality to which we are duty bound to seek upon entering leaving the Veil behind us to enter the World."

"If you please bring us to your lord and lady. I am most eager to see what my sister has been up to."

MECHANICS, ETC

Primary Goals
: Prevent either M from reaching B2 square of 1st floor. If either M reaches that sq, 1 Failure is accrued in the Skill Challenge; the Elect cell in Fallcrest is warned of Leif's presence and doings here.

Secondary Optional Goal: Gain the intel from the vellum tossed into the cooking fire by the Ritualist (see below for details).

* ILLUMINATION: Low Light or Concealment (all parties are Shifters so all have Low Light).

* 2ND FLOOR HOLE (Hindering Terrain): Any creature forced into hole falls 10 ft (1d10 damage) to corresponding sq on 1st floor. An adjacent creature can Hop Down (see Acrobatics).

* RABID DOG (E4 1st Floor, Hindering Terrain): Effect: When a creature enters Rabid Dog's square, it takes 5 damage. When a creature enters a square adjacent to Rabid Dog, it is slowed UEoNT.

* POISONMIRE (PURPLE, hindering terrain): Effect: Any creature that enters a square of Poisonmire or ends its turn adjacent takes 5 poison damage. A creature can take this damage only once per turn.

* DEBRIS (difficult terrain): Any square with debris is difficult terrain.

* LADDER (KL 1 & 2): The ladder is slick and rotted and require a Acrobatics check to traverse, costs 1 extra sq of movement to traverse, and qualify as both Unstable and Narrow for Balance purposes (see Acrobatics).

* THE ELECT FALLCREST MAP AND INTEL (RED STAR): The Ritualist tossed the rolled vellum into the small cooking fire. It will go up in smoke at the end of round 1 if not secured. Minor Action (adjacent sq) to secure it for 1 Success in the Skill Challenge (and actionable intel); Thievery DC 12. Failure and its secured, but Leif takes 5 Fire damage. Can attempt Free Action to secure vellum, but failure on Thievery DC means that Vellum is failed to be retrieved, burns beyond usage, and Lief takes 5 fire damage.

* Elect Assassin (medium, natural, humanoid, Lurker, Minion) = HP 1, AC 15, Fortitude 13, Reflex 14, Will 12.

* Elect Ritualist (medium, natural, humanoid, Controller, Minion) = HP 1, AC 15, Fortitude 12, Reflex 13, Will 14.

* Roll Monster Knowledge (Nature; take +2 Circumstance Bonus due to Theme) and Initiative -2. Failure to exceed enemy Initiative = enemies have CA vs Leif in rd 1.

* Initiative:

Lurker: r(13) +4 = 17
Lief: r(1) +4 - 2 = 3
Controller: r(2) +1 = 3 (Lief's Dexterity is better so he goes first)

The ELECT ASSASSIN staggers back when Leif leaps down from his perch to interrupt the surveillance. As Leif's foot crashes through the rotted floor, the assassin spits out a "traitorous fool" and seizes upon the opening to attempt to gut his former comrade-in-arms.

When Leif pulls his core back just in time to avoid the worst of it, the assassin retreats into the corridor near the fire to protect the escape of the Ritualist.

"Get out of here. Tell the others," he says over his shoulder.

The Ritualist has already dumped their maps and correspondence into the makeshift fire and is ready to beat feet.

* Standard: Deft Blade (M1, weapon) vs L's Ref: r(18) +4 +2 (CA) = 24; Hit. 5 damage (target grants CA) to L.

* End of Turn: Evasion (free action); the assassin shifts 2 sq to H3.

LOCATION: H3.
DAMAGE TO ENEMIES: 5 damage to L.

LIEF vaults over the fleeing cultist to land between them. "Traitorous fools!" he rasps, pleased with his little joke as tears through them. Before their bodies touch the floor he lunges for the burning vellum, steeling himself against the fire as the light plays against his fanged, maniacal grin.

* Move: Crane's Wing Movement Tech (+5 power bonus Athletics) to running leap over ML to sq I3. Need 20 or better to clear 4 ft vertically. r(19) +11 = 30. Success. TRIGGERS ML MBA DEFT BLADE (M1, WEAPON) VS L'S REF; r(5) +4 (no longer has CA) = 9. MISS.

Starn looks at Captain Edmunds and says "Ah, yes, Edmunds! I read the entire Armicus Nerathicus cover to cover! Quite an old and prestigious family indeed. You surely serve the Lord and Lady with great assiduousness. I'd love to accompany you back to the Tower. In fact I am eager to do so, but I hope you will allow me to have a few moments with the Markalheys first, please? I promise I'll come explore the ruins with you, and I can even help your examination, as I know a bit about the design of the Tower! Did you know it was once one of the Seven Seats of Pelor's Crown of Light in Nerath?"

Using Dungeoneering to demonstrate to Edmunds how useful I am, and at the same time being a bit annoying so she'll hopefully let me go talk to the Markalheys and give her a break.

Commander Edmunds considers Sariel's words and replies with a sincere nod:

"Your apologies excepted master elf (she clearly doesn't know the distinction between eladrin and elf). What you described is probably the right of it. I know things neither magic nor fey. I just know this <raising and looking at her sword>.

As for the histories of our peoples, that may be true as well. Four hundred years ago, a Nerathan hero named Aranda Markelhay founded this place. It fell to hordes within the last hundred and most of our records were burned. However, something persuaded our current Lady and Lord Markelhay to see your sister. Perhaps it was exactly this historical connection you speak of. I suppose you'll find out soon enough."

She pauses to listen to Starn's regaling of history with absolute perplexion. Just when she's about to interrupt him one of her engineers, a halfling wearing a monocle (because of course!) and a tight-fitting suit, steps forward:

"No, no, no! I want to hear more! I am Rupert Proudseeker...pleased to make your acquaintance. I did my dissertation on Armicus Nerathicus! Let me ask you, Sir Wizard, if I may..."

<Captain Edmunds abruptly cuts him off to lead you to the receiving chamber of the Lord and Lady>

"Right this way," she says while side-eyeing the excited halfling engineer.

<Cut to the Markelhay receiving chamber>

The chamber is bereft of ostentation. The stone walls, near barren, feature a single hanging tapestry which was burned to such a degree that its contents are indecipherable. The two seats at the far end of the long table for the Lord and Lady are not adorned with fancy cushions or stitching. The servingware is plain. The food adorned with mostly essentials only. The few servants wear simple smocks. Speaking of those seats, one chair is empty; only the Lady Markelhay is present. She is similarly lacking in a presentation that would befit wealthy station. (i)

The Lady takes note of one or both of you regarding the burned tapestry.

"A precious relic of the past. It could not be restored, of course, but that doesn't mean its lost its import." (ii)

She takes a bite of the food on her plate via fork. "Well, you're interrupting lunch, so lets be on with it." She points at a pair of empty seats at the far end with food ready for both of you. "My husband is convening with his council to arrange a series of runners to travel to the corners of the Vale and express our situation here. The Tower of Waiting collapsed. An eladrin (she knows the difference) noble of a Fey Court...sorry, two eladrin nobles <pointing her fork at Sariel>...chasing down a dangerous sibling assassin who haunts our surrounds...which probably places us in the crosshairs of a spillover war from another world...one we cannot handle (iii)...and the Septarch missing, his Tower locked up tight." (iv)

She nods at Starn, "that leaves you homeless, Starn? In my apprenticeship under Nimozaran the Green, he never treated me so poorly. He was always a weird one...I thought his odd worship of Pelior to be a tad heretical if I'm being honest (v)...but I wonder what you must have done to give such great offense, Starn Formerly of the Septarch's Tower!?"

Do you guys break the ice engaging with (i) or (ii) or (v)? Or do you get right to it with (iii) or (iv)? MEDIUM DC all (hard dc's exhausted).

Per Grendel:

The Elect have marked the Kamroth Estate and the Tombwood as "theirs."

Lief assumes the estate is the best they could do to gain the high ground—they can be effective at converting targets, if they didn't just kill the poor bastard—and the Tombswood lets them stay unseen in the area while glorifying the Mogul under His open sky and all-seeing moon. But he's just guessing. As one of His Claws, Lief was kept sanctified from the fallen world and any decisions related to it.

Bodies of his former comrades at his feet, Leif thumbs through his retrieved cache of intelligence. The sound of the dog's incessant barking on the 1st floor has receded from his mind. Suddenly something else jumps to the forefront of his senses.

"Get back here, boy!"

As the dairy trader's voice booms out, Leif's eyes reflexively go to the window the Elect Assassin was using to surveil the household of Renne's widow. The elder son has cut the purse of the dairy trader and is off and running down the road, surely to cut into a nearby alleyway to lose pursuit (if he can).

"Your son just bought himself a death sentence. Get on with it," he instructs a man-at-arms on horseback escorting him through this seedier section of Fallcrest. The rider takes off in a gallop after the boy, drawing a blade as he does.

Renne's widow falls to her knees and screams, grasping at the legs of the trader, begging him to call off his rider. The little boy at the widow's feet begins crying.

Leif feels a familiar presence. He doesn't even need to look to know the face of the disapproving stag is next to him...staring...silently judging.

What do you do Leif? MEDIUM DC.

LIEF

"No!" Lief snarls, the sound turning wild in his throat as he launches back onto the roof and gives chase. He's hunting this filthy sellsword now, anticipating when and where his prey will veer off to try to intercept the boy. Lief means to get there first, and knock this would-be child-killer out—break something, maybe more than one thing, but not kill him, like he deserves.

Intent: Intercept and either knock out the man-at-arms, or just initiate combat with him, preferably in an alley or somewhere they won't be seen.

I think that Starn will reply to the Lady in reference to (v) the religious philosophy of Nimozaran.

"Indeed Lady, his insistence on the Arcane element of Pelor's light surely contradicts the precepts of Frogmorton's The Secrets of the Arcane. Honestly he tried to hide that work from me, but I admit to an overabundance of curiosity. When I read it I was quite taken, and I hope to be of service in Ioun's Quest someday. Surely you don't think a Godwar is impending? Whatever my Master's beliefs, he's not treated me too harshly in all."

Medium religion check, I'm trying to suss out exactly what the Lady knows and where she stands. DC 13, rolled an 18 +5 (INT) = 23, success.

A peal of thunder. The mid-day sky opens up.

The sound of the horse's gallop racing in the rain somewhere on Leif's flank.

It outpaces him.

Leif turns the corner and the boy is face down on the ground, water and blood pooled around him. The rider is off in a flash, coinpurse reacquired. In short order, long before Leif can get there, the rider, the coinpurse, and the dairy trader will be gone.

Without a hint of concern for scandalous remark, Lady Markelhay quips "in truth, I have long felt that Nimozaran the Green has either gone senile in his age or he venerates a power that masks itself as Pelor...and not actually the god of the sun, the sowing and reaping of the field, and time itself."

The master suite door opens with audible sounds of iron and wood.

"There you are, my love," she says.

An aged herald tries to announce his entrance, "Lord Warden of...," but he quickly gets waved off by Faren Markelhay who then kisses his lady on the cheek from behind before taking a seat next to her.

"Well, its done," he says to her and she smiles back at him. He then looks to regard his guests.

"You must be Sariel. Your sister, Enumbra...she said you would be fast on her heels. She also said to not aid you. I have to be honest. I could not tell whether this was simple sibling rivalry, whether she doesn't trust your prowess...or something more sinister. What say you on the matter?"

A solitary tear trails down Sariel's cheek at the mention of Enumbra. She had always been his favorite. He could only hope that she means to fetch their brother herself.

"That is most peculiar for I have not come seeking your aid, but to present ill tidings from my father's court and offer my own aid to you. My people, the Eladrin, reside over The World's Heart, what you mortals call the Feywild. While we may appear to be eternal and unchanging we are actually deeply mercurial, changing with the seasons. For us falling under the sway of our emotions may change our very nature. The more ancient and powerful we become the more this becomes true. This is why my father, the Ghaele of Winter seldom leaves the World's Heart and why we do our best to not take part in the conflicts of Man and Gods."

"My brother, Andarien, eldest of our family has recently undergone such a change in nature. He has lost hope for the future and has fallen to despair. He is now what you might call an unseelie and we simply call The Lost. In the wake of his change, he tried to kill my father and has fled to The World. As old and as powerful as he is his despair is corrosive and might spread to the hearts of men and fey alike."

He pauses to center himself, before he continues.
"Perhaps you could take us to dear Enumbra, so we may sort this all out. I only hope she is not Lost. May Corellon keep hope alive in all our hearts."
