A mystery race ?

Orc would be cool. Goliath could be cool. Drow might just tip me over the edge into a shrieking banshee of elf hate. (I don't really hate elves. But making 4/8 of the races in the PHB elf themed would be madness.)

4/8? Good Lord, that's almost half!!!

I think the obvious mystery race hasn't been mentioned yet.

It will of course be Myconids.

What's not to love? They're great to have on adventures. They are fun guys...

Hell yeah! What's not to love about a race where each other member of the party can nibble a bit on the doode and get a "magic mushroom" high?

Thanks mate, where can I find some info about them?

The Fiend Folio.

Personally, I still hold a deal of emnity towards the Shadar-Kai after a DM of mine used them as the primary antagonists in an ill-concieved "good vs. neutral" campaign

Anyway is there any way to confirm whether half dragons are anathema or just those that come from a dragonmarked family?

Like everyone else has said, elves and half-dragons are probably not going to get along all that well. One place where they might be more accepted (even worshipped) however would be amongst the Seren Barbarian tribes. That's just an educated guess on my part though, I don't know of any official mention.

I think it'll be drow, but I wish it was orcs.

4/8ths of the races being elf-flavored is just too much for me, and I'd feel a lot better about banning <50% of the PHB races in my home games -- and I *will* be banning elves, probably halflings too.

It sounds like you have low elf esteem. Perhaps some sort of elf-help book would remedy that?

With enemies you know where you stand, but with neutrals- Who knows?

I have read about Goliaths in Races of Stone. But I don't understand what's the big deal with them. Could someone explain what's so good about them?

Many people like big strong races. However, many big strong races are either evil, stupid, or both. Some of the people who like big strong races don't like playing races that are evil or stupid. Goliaths are neither. That's why goliaths are popular.

I think you hit it on the head. With goliaths (and to a lesser extent, half-giants), you get to be big without all the baggage that comes with being Large, and they work out very nice mechanically. You're not horribly penalized for wanting to be a Big Strong thing if you take a goliath or a half-giant.

Unless you want to start at first level. ;)

A nice thing is that half-giants and goliaths aren't Stupid. All the Big Strong races are also morons, while they are not.
