While the 3.5 ranger is preety much done I'm sure, I recently thought about this idea for an alt.ranger.
While the barbarian gains enormous power from his encounter with the wilderness, rangers are thought more to get incredible senses and keen insight, so I modeled that with this ability.
Awareness: A certain number of times per day, the ranger can enter a state of enhanced alterness. It is a free action to do so, and he can maintain the state for 5 minutes + 1 minute per wisdom modifier. He gains a +4 to spot, listen, wilderness lore, initiative, and a +2 dodge bonus to AC and reflex saves. He can also take 10 on any spot and listen check. Maintaining such a state is taxing however, and after using awareness the ranger suffers a –2 to spot, listen, and initiative for 30 minutes. Awareness can only be used again after the 30 minutes are up.
A ranger could get this more than one times per day as he went up in levels, what do you all think?
