ZEITGEIST Aartvb's Zeitgeist

Long long ago I ran a campaign that became the inspiration for ZEITGEIST, and in it, things started going way off the rails because the PCs stole all of Asrabey's gear and then went AWOL and became pirates.

Very different from what we ended up publishing, lol.
So I guess some day we can expect an adventure path by your hand involving pirate stuff, which is closer to your original experience? 😋 Cuz I would love to run that 😂

Ha, it was around the time Adult Swim was pushing the ridiculous of 'who would win: a crocodile with wings, or a shark with a jet pack?'
So I had the party encounter an Island of Doctor Moreau knock-off where his chief minions were just such hybrids.

I don't really recall much else. Dr. Wolfgang von Recklinghausen was a PC who, after another PC broke a prisoner's spine, performed spine surgery to restore the guy. I know I had his 'creation' show up, but not what really happened.

Tinker Oddcog existed, and was the foil of the party's own halfling artificer in a mech suit, Alloquicious (who makes a tiny appearance in the third adventure's arm's fair). Oh, right, the Kaybeau Arms Fair was based on a dumb recurring joke one of the players made about the 'smartest kobold in the world,' K-Bo, who had such wild inventions as "A carrier pigeon carrying a hand grenade."

One of the PCs was basically one of the Hammer Bros from Super Mario, which bizarrely was basically the starting seed for the whole idea of Ber being a nation of 'savage' races that had thrown off the yoke of dragons. Because, like, Bowser is a dragon.

Oh, and I did have Rush and Merton (Lya's bodyguards whom you might fight in adventure 6). And the nations had the same names, though Danor didn't have tieflings (they became tiefling focused because 4e made tieflings a mainstream PC race).

I'm sure I've got some notes stashed on some old portable hard drive. But the details of the piracy have faded away compared to the stuff I decided to keep for ZEITGEIST.

Another player joined the group, bringing the PC count finally back to 5. He played Crissy D'Or, a female human sorcerer technologist.

Session 9 (25-4-2022): A Deal with Nevard

500 A.O.V., Summer, Day 2
7:00
: In the morning, the group heads to the Thinking Man’s Tavern.
8:00: Here they meet the owner, Tad Hilly. The tavern isn’t very full. There’s a group of musicians, with a ‘leader’ named Jered Lawman. A group of students from Pardwight University is also present, and Thames Grimsley sits in a corner. Galarin joins the musicians, who are highly critical of the king. They oppose industrialization and therefore view the upcoming alliance with Danor as a bad idea. Initially, they are suspicious of the RHC members, but Galarin manages to somewhat earn their trust. Meanwhile, another party member speaks with the tavern owner. He explains they are investigating Nilasa, but does not reveal that she is dead. Tad (the owner) mentions that Nilasa often came here with Braden and associated with the singers (he didn’t always understand what they were talking about, as they often spoke Elvish) and with people from the university. The group decides to move on.
8:30: They head to Cloudwood to meet Nevard Sechim.
10:30: On the way, they come across a cart containing a kidnapped woman (Morena). The cart is under attack by people from the forest, led by Renard Woodsman. The people in the cart look like they’re from the rough part of town. The group frees and rescues Morena. They find little information about the reason for the abduction. In gratitude, Renard takes them to Nevard.
11:30: Nevard is an old, frail man, nearly on the brink of death. He wants to connect the group with Gale, but in return, he asks that they take him to the top of Cauldron Hill, so he can read the sky one last time. This is dangerous (the place is haunted), and they need permission from the mayor of the Nettles, Reed Macbannin. Nevard asks if they would use a bond or forced faith, allowing him to share in the group’s strength (damage to Nevard would be distributed among the participating characters). Galarin knows nothing about this spell (low arcana roll).
12:00: They go to Reed Macbannin and his butler, Cillian Creed.
14:00: At first, Cillian refuses to allow a meeting because the mayor is busy. The group presses on, and they’re allowed inside. Macbannin gives his permission. They can now go back to Nevard, pick him up, and return tonight to climb the mountain. They will receive protection from Macbannin.
15:00: The group sets off to retrieve Nevard.

By the way, the moment I mentioned there was a butler, Oskár's player said: "THE BUTLER DID IT!". Luckily he decided to stay in character (his character didn't suspect Cillian). But the player knew it all along.

Session 10 (16-5-2022): Visions of Cauldron Hill

The group heads to Nevard.
17:00: Everyone except Zuna participates in the ritual to give strength to Nevard.
19:30: Back at the mayor’s residence, they encounter Aron, a cigar (leaf of nicodemus) smoking thinker who speaks of a better world outside the mayor’s house. The mayor provides them with tools to survive Cauldron Hill, including a magical amulet to protect them.
20:00: They climb Cauldron Hill, where they begin to witness terrifying sights as darkness falls.
22:00: They draw a ring of goat’s blood to distract any monsters.
A curtain appears, and from behind it emerges Nilasa, who warns that her killer is coming. She describes him as having scars on his face, hiding behind many different appearances.

Everyone, except Zuna (and Oskár, who is asleep), sees another vision: a factory ablaze. After the fire, they notice a soot-stained sign that reads, “Sechim’s Alkahest & Etchings.”

Galadin uses his gem of brightness. This momentarily draws their attention before he quickly dims the gem. Suddenly, an unknown figure throws a sunrod toward them, drawing all the monsters their way. A fight breaks out, and three more sunrods are thrown.

Session 11 (1-5-2022): The Flames of Heward’s Factory

500 A.O.V., Summer, Day 3

The battle continues. The sunrods are thrown away, successfully distracting the monsters. 4:00: Nevard announces that he has seen enough in the stars and suggests they descend. He wants a few days to reflect on what he witnessed and promises to ask Gale if she would be willing to contact them.
They make their way down and arrive at the manor.
5:00: There, everyone (except Zuna) undergoes a cleansing ritual to rid themselves of Cauldron Hill’s dark energies.
Because Nevard insists, they pursue the lead to Heward’s factory to see if there is indeed a fire. 6:00: At the factory, they find two dragonborn and several thugs unloading crates onto the roof.

After a brief exchange, the group grows suspicious, and a fight ensues. The thugs and one dragonborn are killed—Zuna notably charges through a wall of fire in bear form—while the second dragonborn escapes. A cart, ignited by the wall of fire, is driven into the canal.

Heward, confused by the commotion, wants to know what’s happening. Zuna explains by throwing the head of the slain dragonborn at him. Heward quickly slams the door shut.

Session 12 (15-5-2022): Dangerous Deals and Traps in Flint

After a conversation, Heward gains some understanding of what happened. Zuna speaks with the spirit of the deceased dragonborn, who reveals that a coachman had given them orders for the arson attacks.

6:30: The group decides to head to the House of the Blue Bird to rest. They attempt to find information by asking the coachman about doing a shady job, maybe he knows who can do such things, but this leads nowhere.
7:00: They spend the night at the hostel.

15:00: After resting, they mingle with the wealthy, listening for potential connections. They hear about an upcoming wedding between the son of factory owner Guy Goodson and a noblewoman from Crissillyir, an event people see as a precursor to King Aodhan’s wedding with Lya Jierre early next year.

A hostel staff member inquires how Zuna's search for the doctor is going. Zuna tries to gather more information about shady businesses, and the staff member suggests they look for Lorcan Kell in Parity Lake.

16:00: Oskár is summoned to the RHC headquarters via a message spell. On the way, they again ask the coachman about possible shady employers, who mentions a new group in Flint known as “The Family”.

17:00: At headquarters, Stover Delft is angry at the group, because they have been out of contact for nearly two days and had left a corpse at the consulate. The consulate wanted the body removed, and Heward wanted to have it, but no one had given the RHC instructions on what to do with it. Delft is angry about this. The group says that the body may be released. The group doesn't like Delft’s attitude.

17:30: As they leave, a man approaches, telling them Lorcan Kell will be waiting for them at 8 PM at the Lammers Theater in Parity Lake. He claims Kell can lead them to the doctor they’re searching for.

18:30: They arrive at the theater 1.5 hours early, so they head to a nearby pub. Along the way, a gust of wind and a yellow canary appear. They hear a woman’s voice with a Danoran accent saying that a friend recommended she speak with them. They may mention a time, then the canary will guide them at that moment. The group proposes meeting at midnight the following day.

19:45: After having spent some time in the pub, they return to the theater, where they find a man on the ground with a head injury and a woman shouting, “Catch the thieves!” Zuna and Chrissy give chase while Oskár stays behind. It turns out it’s a trap: Zuna and Chrissy end up on stage with an audience pointing guns and crossbows at them. Oskár is also detained outside.

20:00: Lorcan Kell appears high up in a booth, telling them his men have eyes on the doctor and that he’ll lead them there—if they do a favor in return. He wants them to intercept rivals smuggling magical weapons into Flint at the harbor on the fourth day of summer (tomorrow) and bring the weapons to him. The group reluctantly agrees, feeling pressured, but their true intentions remain uncertain.

21:30: They return to RHC headquarters for a debriefing, mentioning only that they may meet an informant tomorrow and need supplies for a disguise. They also request someone investigate the invisibility potion at Pine Island, which is arranged as a Level 1 Prestige Favor from Risur.

Which leads does the group currently have, and where are they located?

Parity Lake
  • Police Department: Nilasa was held here previously.
Bosum Strand
  • Thinking Man’s Tavern: Located in the harbor. This is where Nilasa and her friend frequently visited.
Cloudwood
  • Gale is hiding somewhere here (exact location unknown). Nevard has promised to arrange contact between Gale and the group.
  • Nevard lives here and is reflecting on his visions.
Pine Island
  • The invisibility potion was created here. An investigation is underway, and more information should be available the next day at RHC headquarters (in the Central District).
Docks
  • Somewhere in the docks, the smuggling of magical weapons will take place the following evening, but it could be in numerous locations.
  • There should be a raft in the docks for which the group has the ownership certificate, though it only has a code, making it challenging to locate.
North Shore
  • Dr. Barnaby Camp lives and works here. He had written a letter of recommendation on behalf of the doctor to the House of the Blue Birds. He may have more information about the doctor’s whereabouts.
Unknown Location
  • The doctor fled with Nilasa’s papers and her “canary in a coalmine” necklace that she had received from Gale. Lorcan Kell claims he can lead the group to the doctor if they succeed in stopping the smugglers.
  • The owner of the canary wishes to speak with the group tomorrow at midnight, and the location will be revealed by the canary at that time.

Session 13 (13-7-2022): The Smuggler's Pursuit

Unfortunately Chrissy's player already left after 3 sessions, but the replacing team member is still in our group! He plays Morthos, a male tiefling paladin vekeshi mystic.

500 A.O.V., Summer, Day 4

10:00
: Chrissy resigns from the RHC, but a new member, the tiefling Morthos, immediately joins the group. They decide to search for the smuggling operation's location.

11:00: They ask around, and Oskár manages to find someone with more knowledge of smuggling and arranges a meeting. Meanwhile, Zuna, using her abilities to communicate with a seagull, discovers that much of the smuggling takes place on the water. They get a boat from the RHC.

11:30: Oskár convinces their contact at the meeting to take them to the smuggler leader, with Morthos following at a distance.
14:00: After a brief conversation, it becomes increasingly clear that they are indeed the smugglers.

19:00: In the evening, the group follows the smugglers using the RHC boat. They hide within a magical mist created by Zuna.
20:00: Then they disguise themselves as smugglers to approach people with magical weapons on a ship with a Crissillyir name. However, the smugglers become suspicious and sail off.

20:30: The group resumes pursuit of the original smuggler boat, steadily closing in on it.

Session 14 (27-7-2022): Secrets of the Bleak Gate

21:30: A battle ensues with the other boat, but the group prevails effortlessly. They discover a chest containing gold bars worth 10,000 gp and Crissillyir notes valued at 150,000 gp. A little bird begins to sing, leading them to the next meeting point at midnight.

500 A.O.V., Summer, Day 5
00:00
: The bird guides the group all the way to the Cloudwood, where they find Gale waiting by a waterfall.
2:00: She explains that someone from the Unseen Court took her to the Bleak Gate (this world’s shadow realm) some time ago. There, she saw light in the mirrored version of Flint and heard human sounds. She saw people walking along the mirror version of Flint's canal, through Parity Lake, and toward the Nettles. According to Gale, something dark is being constructed there. Nilasa had found a clue, which ultimately led to her death.

Gale no longer has a way to access the Bleak Gate, but she has evidence. She gives Galarin a small book with a ritual—a spell that can detect energies from a specific plane. Since the group was near the Bleak Gate on Cauldron Hill, they can follow traces leading there.

Gale has found traces of this energy at various locations in the city, especially at the consulate after Nilasa's murder, and around factories and their owners. She suspects a conspiracy involving Danor and asks the group to help counter it.

The group learns that Gale’s followers intended to buy the magical weapons from the smugglers. They give Gale a portion of the money, promising the rest later if Gale proves trustworthy. Gale provides them with a "Messenger Wind," keeping one feather herself so they can communicate.

She also asks the group to watch over Nevard, as he plans to hold a major gathering in Flint, which could be dangerous. Gale notices dark energies surrounding Zuna, which turn out to be from not having completed a cleansing ceremony after Cauldron Hill. Finally, Gale has a private conversation with Morthos.

Session 15 (17-8-2022): A Shadowy Doctor

The group doesn’t hear this, but: Morthos gives a mirror to Gale, with the message that the mirror comes from the Unseen Court and that she would see the faces of her opponents in it. They must be brought down from their pedestal. Gale asks if she should use violence, but Morthos leaves that decision up to her. She decides that violence would probably only be a last resort.

2:30: Then, Morthos also departs, and the group heads to Stover Delft.

4:30: It’s already the middle of the night, but Stover Delft is still awake. He’s not pleased that they let Gale go. However, he’s glad they stopped the smuggling and managed to seize some gold and money. At Zuna’s request, he gives them another 50 gp. They also receive sending stones, allowing them to communicate with Stover Delft once a day.

Delft does mention, though, that he feels like he has to pull information out of them, rather than them offering it willingly. He feels like they don't trust him. Trip explains that they want to be cautious woth sharing information in case there’s a mole in the RHC. Delft is startled at the idea of a possible mole and asks if they have any reason to suspect this. The group brushes it off, as they, of course, don’t have any reason to believe this.

13:00: By the afternoon of the next day, they finally wake up, since they didn’t get to bed until the middle of the night. They decide to go to the theater where they had met Lorcan Kell. They want to gather information on the doctor, as that’s why they stopped the smuggling.

15:00: A follower of Kell intercepts them and brings them to Kell. He says he’s pleased with what they’ve done and directs someone to take them to Wolfgang.

15:45: They arrive at Wolfgang’s location. He’s sitting by a church carved into a rock, which used to belong to the Clergy but has now completely fallen into disrepair. There’s a line of people wanting to get inside because there’s a doctor there. Wolfgang has some guards with him.

Wolfgang explains that he needs a visa and that he was sent from one place to another in an endless cycle. When he finally got to the Danoran embassy, Nilasa fell onto the fence. He fled, and Kell’s people brought him here to help him.

16:00: After a short conversation, the group promises to handle Wolfgang’s paperwork. They set off, but first, Wolfgang grabs a bag from a ledge. Then they leave.

Suddenly, the people are gone, and they find the entrance barred by metal grates. It grows dark, and a fight begins. It appears that Wolfgang is their target.

Session 16 (7-9-2022): The Steelshaper’s Ultimatum

The fight continued. Eventually, they manage to remove the bars, allowing them to pass through. Wolfgang is freed, and it turns out that a police officer had taken him along.

16:15: At the exit, several people are waiting, along with three carts hitched to zombie-like horses. The spokesperson introduces himself as Leone Quitall, also known as "The Steelshaper." He is sipping wine and eating cheese from a tray suspended in front of him. The group has given him the nickname “Mr. Magneto.”

He gives them an hour to hand over the doctor and his papers before he would resort to a less friendly approach.

The group goes back inside to search for another exit, while Galarin searches through the papers and spoke with Wolfgang. Wolfgang explains that Nilasa had given him a bag with documents and a “canary in a coalmine” to deliver to someone named Heward. He had fled to Kell, who promised to smuggle him out of the country, offering him shelter in the meantime.

In the little time he has, Galarin notices that most of the documents are financial records related to factories.

16:30: In the meantime, Morthos has found an exit. They all climb up and escape to safety.
