D&D 5E Additive versus subtractive modularity

Ok, offer me a suggestion for how to make 5E play enough like 3E with regard to healing. It must be good enough that I don't just decide to play a better game.

And there is still the issue of 100% healing with a long rest....

They have explicitly said there will be a slow healing module in the DMG, so I don't think that you need to worry about 100% healing on a long rest if that's not something that you like.

With regard to second wind, the simplest answer is to just replace it with the Toughness feat. It would have been nice if they just added that sentence to the PDF, but they didn't.

The only tricky one as I see it is the survivor ability. I think making that into temp HPs works, as does changing it into some kind of damage reduction.

My theory is that there's a disconnect between how fans are thinking about modularity, and how WotC is thinking about modularity.
Also, I'd still say that if WotC ISN'T thinking of it the way that "we" are, then they are arbitrarily handicapping themselves. I think that would be a bad idea.

I understand that. My reply was within the context of the OP. If they remove 100% healing and replace it with slow healing then the OP is wrong and my reply is moot. :)

Which "we" should they be thinking? Your "we" way, or someone else "we"? "We" the player base have multiple ways "we" are thinking of the modularity, and of many of the rules as well.

How about let the Cleric trade any spell prepped for Cure Wounds. Then, change natural healing to slower progression. That's what 3e did for healing. Seems pretty easy to me.

How would 5e not allow me to do this? Will WotC come to my door and kick me in the shins if I do? :p
That should be another poll:

How should WotC punish the people who exclude rules, play the game as exactly written, and/or (gasp) use homebrewed rules?

A. Loss of a limb;
B. Loss of two limbs;
C. Not allowed to buy any WotC products; or
D. Loss of four limbs.

I think WotC is not focused on either type of modularity as you have described it. The have simply created a mishmash of popular things from each edition.
