Adventure: Get Me to the Church on Time (DM: BenBrown, Judge: Renau1g)

With the rush of Spider's blow, the bees disperse. As the party begins to catch their breath, the party hears the sound of a single person clapping slowly. Up on the edge of the ravine, back near where Lord Mallaby is hidden, a woman emerges. She is dressed in leather boots and a protective leather vest, with buff-colored trousers and somewhat lighter, off-white sleeves, and gloves of lighter leather. Over this she wears a flowing green cloak, which is pushed back from her head, revealing a head of short curly brown hair over a cheerful face. At her side is a long thin sword, and she has a brace of daggers strapped across her chest, and several more at other places around her person, as well as a quiver of arrows on her back with a

"Well done," she says. "It looked a little touch and go there for a bit when that frog swallowed the dwarf."

She tosses a rope over the edge and hops down to the lower tier of the gorge's wall.

"Dirk!" she shouts. "Are these all of them?"

A dwarf emerges from the trees at the edge of the ravine. "Let's see. That's most of 'em, but that one in black"--he indicates Tyris--"he's new. There's another fellow that was with 'em."

"Here he is," says a female voice from the other edge of the ravine, above where Mallaby is standing. "Behind the tree." The speaker is dressed in lighter clothing, and bears a staff in her hand and no other visible weapon.

The first woman hops down to the canyon floor as Lord Mallaby emerges from his hiding place.

"My dear lady," he says, "I am Lord Mallaby, and this is my expedition. These worthy persons all have accompanied me, except, as you noted, the man in black."

He calls out to his party. "This new person, whence did he come?"

"He sort of appeared,"
Eraden answers, stepping towards the direction Tyris came from. "There was a flash of--" before he can finish, there is indeed another flash, and a hole in the air opens up and draws him in before disappearing.

"Wild magic," the woman with the staff comments.

"Thank you, Thais,"
the other woman says. "Edgar, make a note of that!" She turns back to address the adventurers. "It shows up around here sometimes."

"Am I correct in believing that I am addressing one Ismene?" Lord Mallaby asks, taking her hand and kissing it formally.

She smiles. "Aren't you a cute one," she says. "Yep, Ismene, that's me. And now I'm afraid, since you're trespassing in my territory, I need to extract a toll."

By this point, several more archers have emerged from the woods, bows already drawn, and a couple of more figures with swords have appeared on the edge, and thrown ropes over to climb down.[sblock=ooc]Everybody gets the benefits of a short rest. Recover encounter powers, and tell me how many healing surges you're using.

Bluesfella, sorry I had to retcon your post. Hazards of play-by-post and people taking actions at all hours, I guess.

This is not necessarily a combat encounter but I included the map. If a fight does start, the PCs set up in the area indicated by the blue rectangle on the map below. However, before the fighting (if any) we have the talking. Carry on, gentlemen.[/sblock][sblock=map]

* The +10 and +20 markers indicate height above the canyon floor of the ledges. Climb check is DC 15 Athletics.
* The reddish-brown lines are the edges.
* The brown circles are trees, as usual.
* Piles of debris (brown and green things) are difficult terrain.
* Those marked with red squares are known traps:
**+4 vs. Reflex
**Hit: Target is Immobilized (save ends)
**Miss: Target is Slowed until the end of its next turn.
**Athletics DC15 (standard action) will collapse the pile, turning it into normal difficult terrain.
* The green squares are collapsed traps, and are treated just like the other difficult terrain.

Goldenhorn looks at the disappearing Eraden in some surprise, then at Tyris, then back at the spot recently vacated by Eraden. He gives his head shake, quickly recovering his composure. "As you seem familiar with us, I will assume that you know that I am Ingvar Goldenhorn, of the line of Asterion the First. You will forgive me, I hope, if I take issue with the idea of paying a toll: a toll is normally charged for the provision of some service, and you have provided none, though you might easily have done so, if, for example, you chose to aid us against the dangerous inhabitants of this area that you claim is your territory. Rather, it is we who seem to have entertained you with our exploits, and you asked no permission to view our remarkable feats; therefore, it seems much more fitting that you should pay us."

Zardi looks at each new person in turn, squinting his eyes and trying to size them up. If Mallaby does not win this lady over, he must be ready to fight. He says nothing yet, but continues chewing on the bees.

When Eraden disappears, he is startled, and looks around at his companions to see if they are as confused as he is...

[sblock=ooc]So, Eraden just disappeared, then? Should we be concerned, or is this because he hasn't been available to post in a while?

Also, no sweat about retconning my last post, I went back and edited out the movement.

One more thing, for planning purposes. From my location, how many squares of movement would it take to climb up next to archer #5? I'm confused about how the trees would affect my progress. Could I climb right up to D6, step over to C5, then climb up to B5 all in one double move? I have a speed of 5.[/sblock]

[sblock=bluesfella]I just zapped him out because he hasn't posted in several weeks and if this turns into a fight, I don't want to NPC him through the whole thing.

As far as climbing, you have to make an athletics check (DC 15), and climbing is at half normal speed, so to rise 10 feet would be 4 squares of movement. With a double move you would be able to get up next to Archer #5 assuming you succeed at two athletics checks[/sblock]

[sblock=ooc]Got it, thanks![/sblock]

Tyris eases his hood slightly further forward to better hide his face and waits to see what happens.

[sblock="ooc"]I'm using two healing surges to put me back at 23 hp, leaving me with 2 surges remaining. I'm going to sit and see how things go starting out before I do anything else. In case people weren't following the Tavern before I joined, my character doesn't talk, which makes diplomacy/bargaining a bit harder. I do have a really good bluff score if it looks like I could put it to use somehow.[/sblock]

OOC: Use one surge to get back to 25.

Spider steps back and mutters, "Ar ya tryin ta get Lor' Malabee killed, Gold'orn?"

"'Ey, Prettey Lady, ya must know I an I not meaning ta trespass a ya lands, dis da tru. I an I meanin no 'arm ta you and yours. So, tell I an I, wha kinda toll ya tinkin about. Ya dun saw wha I an I issa best at; mayhap dere a common enemy between us. I an I got no love fo dem 'orin 'oblins, dat for tru." he said, spitting on the ground to emphasize his dislike for goblins. "I an I dun took a few a dem 'eads already. I could get some'more, iffin it pay da toll."

If Graval is surprised by the disappearance of Eraden, he doesn't show it at the moment. He does, however, chuckle at Goldenhorn's turn of phrase, cleaning the last of the frog ichor off as best he can. The dwarf straightens his beard back to its normal semi-tangled mass and slowly walks towards Lord Mallaby and Ismene.

With a broad grin, he states, "Meself is fer agreein' wit' both me friends. Ye got yerself a good show - disappearin' dwarf an' all - and meself and me own can give ye another one wit' some gobbo heads on pikes. Both o' them've gotta be worth tha price o' yer toll."

The smile quickly drops away. "Wha' ye be sayin' o' tha'?"

"A valid point, Ingvar Goldenhorn," Ismene says, "But I do provide a service. Were it not for me and my little band, you'd not be facing bears and frogs, but rather hordes of bugbears and hobgoblins. I may be convinced to knock something off the price, though, for the entertainment value."

"Hmm," she says. "It's a consideration."

"This morning they fought and defeated a small hobgoblin band," Mallaby says. "For such a lovely lady, I'm sure they would be happy to oblige, but we are on a schedule. By tomorrow sundown, we must be at Count's Crovale across the Derianis Ridge, for I am to be married then."

"Well congratulations," she says to Mallaby. "Okay, then. You'd better make this fast. A big Hobgoblin named Ruthak is holed up in an old signal tower on Zigal Peak with a bunch of his pals. He's been giving us fits. We're good for hit and run, but a fortress assault is too risky. It's only about two hours from here. Edgar will show you on a map. Edgar!"

The the swordsman on the edge on Ismene's right rappels down his rope and sheathing his sword and withdrawing a map indicates the current location of the party, the location of the tower, and where the path breaks off.

"Edgar and Carlotta will wait here for you, if you'd like, while the rest of us find a better spot. However, until you're done, I think I'll keep loverboy here as collateral." She grabs Mallaby around the shoulders and gives him a big kiss right on the lips. "Have fun!"

"So: two hours to get there, and two hours to get back, and in between we must assault a fortification in broad daylight?" Goldenhorn asks, a hint of contempt creeping into his tone. "If this is your notion of a special offer, then it is truly no wonder that you have been unable to profit at any legitimate occupation, lady. Lord Mallaby, I suggest you come away from there; pay the woman off if her beauty requires that gallantry--but do not flatter yourself that your company must be more pleasing to her than your money. If there were time I am sure that several here would be ready to indulge her by hunting down some goblins, however rudely the favor was asked; but four hours is an unacceptable delay."
