Adventure: Lord Byron’s Economic Woes (DM: Tenchuu, Judge: H.M.Gimlord)

Seeing the newcomer the bugbear says "Oh, hi! I'm Kane, who're you?"

Stanng Sees another figure enter the hut as he is picking up his gear. As I mentioned to your comrades moments ago, I am called Stanng. I am a Templar of Maros here in the employ of Lord Byron. I'll be ready to venture out with you shortly. If you'll all excuse me, I need to prepare myself for battle. After they have all left, Stanng puts his armor back on and picks up his sword, shield and backpack. Saying a prayer to Maros before he leaves the tiny hut behind, he then trudges out after the others who are already tracking the beastly little creatures that had ambushed him.

Challenge Roll: Perception 1D20 + 3 => 5 (rolled on Dice Room)

After seeing the fleeing Kobolds, Stanng is ready to pay the debt of gratitude to them for his unwanted imprisonment. Stanng follows the one called "Kane" into the woods after them. he would get to know these new folk as soon as they were all able to rest more peacably.

My Sheet is approved though it was recommended that I tweak a couple of things on it. I'll get that done shortly.

[sblock=renau1g]Sounds good to me.

Round 1
Successes:
- Kane (Endurance)
- Wil (Nature)
Failures:
- Stanng (Perception)

Still waiting on: Hergunna and Tessa.

I expect LadyJane back today, so if she is and she posts, I'll NPC for Hergunna (my apologies if we miss, especially if that fails the challenge, so LJ make sure you roll good!). I don't think ryryguy is back until Wednesday.

Skill Challenge

Setup: Players follow the wounded creatures into the forest, trying to catch them, while avoiding any kobold traps. The trek is long and mostly uphill as they approach the mountain.
Complexity: 2 (requires 6 successes before 3 failures)
DC: 14 (secondary Skills 18)
Primary Skills: Nature, Perception, Stealth, Endurance

Rules:
- Each character gets 1 roll per turn
- Each character can only use a single primary skill once. For example: If
Hergunna uses Nature this round, she cannot use nature again. But everyone else could still use Nature this or any subsequent round once. As stated in DMG1, the same single-use rule applies to secondary skills.[/sblock][sblock=OOC]
Looks like Stanng doesn't have any trained skills in the primary column. You guys might want to strategize about who rolls what in round 2 to maximize your chances for success. [/sblock]

[sblock=Tactics]
Perhaps Stanng can try to aid another next round? Another option is for you to try Athletics? Maybe with an aid from Kane? I can see maybe a large tree blocking the path or a pit trap to jump over. Kane could give you a lift. DC's higher, but if I aid, and your +11 bonus it would only need a 5 or higher. [/sblock]

[sblock=tactics] Wil got lucky in the first round but I only have a +5 in two of the other skills so I could aid another next round as well if they have another primary that is better like LJ or H. If you have no better skill mention it this time...

[sblock=tactics/renau1g]I'm not entirely convinced of your example for aiding in athletics. If there was a pit trap he needed to jump over (no option), and you aided, then everyone would need to make an athletics check to jump the pit. If there is an alternative, he probably would just take it. I'm also not sure that example matches the intent of Group Checks in DMG.

That said, I like where you are going with this. Find a better scenario to use athletics while still meeting the purpose of this challenge (i.e., track the kobolds while avoiding traps/ambush). Then give me a few lines in character to how you (or another PC) will assist Stanng in his Athletics (or another skill), and I'll give a GM bonus of +2, no group roll required.

I like the creativity, just not the pit jump example (I can even see where if you flushed it out more, jumping would make sense to assist with, just not over a pit trap. The tree one.. might be able to roll play that).

[sblock=tactics]
Kane has a +9 in athletics, although maybe he could try to yell really loudly and intimidate them? +9 there as well. His stealth is +6, but with Hergunna's ritual in effect it it's +11. So I guess next round Kane's going to try and be sneaky sneaky, like only a 7 foot tall 300 lb bugbear can.

[sblock=tactics]Sorry about that. I thought I was only allowed to roll one of the 4 that Tenchuu listed. I could definitely be creative in my attempt up this hill. Not only to I have a climbers kit (since this is uphill). I also have a grappling hook and rope to help "climb" uphill, using my athletic ability instead of my endurance. I'll read through the 4e rules for skills again, as this skill challenge thing is a bit new to me. Also, if I was able to use the climber's kit, it would give me a +2 to my checks for a +13 before aid another.

[sblock=Ritual]I don't have PP, so would it still be active? I don't know the duration on the ritual. Even though this hike / tracking skills challenge is going to elapse several hours in game, if it's still active at the start of the encounter, I'll count the bonuses through the whole skill challenge encounter.

Good Job remembering that![/sblock]

[sblock=Ritual]
Here it is. It lasts for 10 hours, but if you attack while hidden you become visible for the encounter before the attack resolves (but it seems you get the bonus once the encounter's done)

Traveler's Camouflage
You and your allies take on the textures and colors of the world around you.

Component Cost: 10 gp
Market Price: 50 gp
Key Skill: NatureLevel: 1
Category: Deception
Time: 10 minutes
Duration: 10 hours

You cloak yourself and any allies present for the ritual in a camouflaging shroud. The subjects of this ritual gain a bonus to Stealth checks while traveling, and other creatures take a penalty when using Perception to find your tracks.

Your Nature check determines the bonus you and your allies gain and the penalty others take.

Nature Check Bonus Penalty
Result to Stealth to Find Tracks
19 or lower +2 –2
20–29 +5 –5
30 or higher +10 –10

This camouflage protects you and your allies as you travel, but not during battle. Any subject who rolls initiative or makes an attack roll loses the benefit of this ritual until the end of the encounter. If a subject is hidden when he or she makes an attack, that subject loses the bonus before making the attack roll, which could cause him or her to lose the benefit of being hidden for that attack.

[sblock=rastl74]Yup. So any skill I don't list as a primary skill is therefor a secondary skill. As long as you can roll play it, try it, but remember it has a higher DC.
