Adventure: Lord Byron’s Economic Woes (DM: Tenchuu, Judge: H.M.Gimlord)

Sitting in the dark, unable to move, Stanng hears combat ring out outside the hut he occupied. Instantly he began struggling against his bonds, not wanting to miss out on the battle and the chance to gain vengeance on his captors. He heard the cry of the wounded and dying and hoped that those who won the battle would be more reasonable than his current captors.

After the sounds of blades and bows grew silent, Stanng braced for what was yet to come. Moments later, he felt the sack covering his head being removed. His eyes focused on the person in front of him. He didn't recognize the woman but was glad to answer her questions.

He nodded downward, hinting that the gag in his mouth was preventing him from answering.

Wil moves into the hut beside Hergunna and takes the gag out of the man's mouth to allow him to speak. You are saved! Wil Rando and his band have defeated your captors. We are all anxious to hear your tale.

Another man came into the hut next to the woman. He removed his gag and asked him to regale them with his tale.

Many thanks, to you and your troop. I am called Stanng, Templar of Maros. I was sent here by Lord Byron with two others to investigate the loss of his investment here. Sadly there isn't much to tell. We arrived here on the island and were ambushed shortly thereafter. They used some sort of sleep magic on us and I woke up in here. I am truly wanting to relocate the rest of my team, could you untie me?

While Wil is talking to the other man, Kane will look over the bodies and other tents for either rewards or hidden threats.

Wil smiles as he cuts the remainder of the man's bonds and checks him for wounds. We too are in the employ of Lord Byron. He said that a group had gone before us and not returned. I am sure we will find your companions. Can you tell us anything more about the foes who fell upon you?

[sblock=OOC] Insight on this new member, not that it worked on Tessa.

[sblock=OOC]In the interest of moving things along, I will post the next encounter (skills challenge). Please continue your in-game dialog as we go through the encounter. I want to encourage in-character roll playing, be it dialog, internal monologue, or just color text. You all have been doing a good job so far, and I'm exploring ways to incentivize this, but for the time being you'll have to do it out of the kindness in your heart.[/sblock]

While the other adventurers were interested in the new arrival, Kane took the opportunity to pick the bodies. He found mostly well-worn tools of the humans who had previously worked here. Some of the implements were sharp, but could be used only as an improvised weapon at best.
[sblock=renau1g]In addition to the junk, Kane finds 55 SP among the fallen. Whether he shares this information, or the coin, with his fellow adventurers remains to be seen.
[/sblock][sblock=Passive Perception DC15]
You notice that Kane has pocketed some items looted from the fallen enemies.
[/sblock]Will unties Stanng, and the shifter quickly gathers his equipment. The adventurers traveled on, and soon after found what remained the main camp: charred buildings and dead bodies. Carrion birds picked at the human remains, undisturbed by the approaching adventurers. Ahead, they meet the gaze of the wounded Kobolds who escaped their last encounter. Outside attack range, the injured creatures darted North in the woods, fearing reprisal.

The adventurers follow, entering the thick woods, getting a look at the mountain ahead before reaching the treeline.

[sblock=Encounter #4]
Encounter 3 was a traps encounter which I scrubbed. I am keeping the original numbers so I don't confuse myself.

Skill Challenge
Setup: Players follow the wounded creatures into the forest, trying to catch them, while avoiding any kobold traps. The trek is long and mostly uphill as they approach the mountain.
Complexity: 2 (requires 6 successes before 3 failures)
DC: 14 (secondary Skills 18)
Primary Skills: Nature, Perception, Stealth, Endurance

Rules:
- Each character gets 1 roll per turn
- Each character can only use a single primary skill once. For example: If
Hergunna uses Nature this round, she cannot use nature again. But everyone else could still use Nature this or any subsequent round once. As stated in DMG1, the same single-use rule applies to secondary skills.

A little harder than last time. Good Luck.

It's been down for over 8 hours now, so I created a dice room called "Lord Byron's Economic Woes". If IC is still down when you want to post, roll your dice here. If you enter the room nme correct, you should see my roll for Wil's insight. [/sblock][sblock=Wil Rando]Insight Check 1D20 + 3 => 22
Stanng seems to be telling the truth about his encounter. You sense no bluff or deception. Also, while well groomed, you are fairly certain that he is a shifter, a human-like race purported to have werewolf ancestors.

"Ha! to the victors goes the gold, well ok just silvers, but it better than nothing" Kane declares as he trots back to the group. He has in his hands a decent pile of silver coins pilfered from the kobolds. Seeing the newcomer the bugbear says "Oh, hi! I'm Kane, who're you?"

With the group prepared to chase the kobolds, Kane looks to where Wil points out and then begins crashing headlong into the thick forest. He calls back "Stay behind me, I will make a path" as he bulls forward knocking aside branches with his large frame, occasionally using his waraxe to remove a particularly large obstacle. The whipping branches stung, but not as much as those kobolds weapons.

As an FYI, I'll be levelling up Kane to level 3, but I will keep him as level 2 for this adventure. I just didn't want to lose out on 800-ish xp from Blade. Does this work for you?

Also, skill check - Endurance - 1D20 + 9 => 14 ; just barely (rolled in the room, IC is still down)
