Advice needed: should I put my game on hold?

As the DM, with responsibility to your own group and the game you run for them, it is ultimately up to the game group. Tell the ex-soldier (btw I love the "names" for everyone lol) that you'd like to put things on hold but that the decision ultimately resides with that of your players. Tell them you'll speak with them and see what they think. Pass on the results to the ex-soldier, make plans if the group wants to go for it, pass on your condolences if the group doesn't want to. Simple as that, being the DM means you run the game but doesn't make you the final arbiter of how the group is run. It'd be awfully inconsiderate to go about making decisions for everyone else in the group.

I second the voting idea.

I would second this opinion, especially as the explanation of ex-lawyer who don't like computer-guys because the soldier who... Oh the headache!

I'm torn between "let the players vote" and "don't put it on hold". The voting might not be necessary since three of your four players don't want you to - two because they don't want you to take a break and one because he doesn't like one of the others.

And it wouldn't be "everyone can play" - the computer-guy wouldn't. He's in the party. The other two guys aren't. So he deserves preferential treatment.

And then there's this: If they want that everyone can play, why don't they just join your group for some time?

Thanks for all the advice. The situation has come to a sort of resolution. I stuck to my answer that I would not put my game on hold, which essentially forced ex-soldier's game on another night (or else probably only lawyer as a player). We're doing both games on different nights with some different people (some the same). I'm not sure how many sessions I will be able to make (especially since university-guy just started a SWRPG for me & road-builder that is just what I want to play--in addition to our new love of SW Minis...), but I'll give it a try. Whatever I relearn for 1e on 1 night, I will just have to unlearn for 3.5 on the next night!

It's your game - what do YOU want to do? You have some responsibility to your players but you are not a SLAVE to running your game. If you WANT to play in this one-or-two-session 1E game your players should not have a problem with putting your own campaign on hold for a game or two. Same as if they were to ask YOU to put the game on hold because they had to leave town for a week or two to visit sick relatives or a business trip.

If you personally are ambivalent about playing this game, look into altering the time of one or both games so that you can still run your own game while playing in the 1E game. [edit: And I see that you effectively have done so. Good on ya.] If you DON'T want to play this 1E game, don't. You should be able to easily bow out (if formally begging off participating is even needed) by simply noting that you have a commitment to your existing players to run your own game and that your players are particularly keen that it not be postponed or delayed.
