Advice on hiring editing and layout people?

Good! Some very usefull info.

Any info on how much you charge for writing or is that the same rate?

Btw, still writing for SR?

Writing tends to be more of a "by the word" thing, and I'll make anywhere from 3.5 cents a word to 6, just depending on the publisher. Most of the companies I work for pay 4 cents a word and up, but that's largely because I've worked with them for a while. Not flaking out and delivering good work has a way of increasing your income.

In answer to your question, yes. :) I co-wrote the Arctic chapter in Target: Wastelands that came out at Origins and wrote the "Culture Shock" chapter for State of the Art: 2063, which is the GenCon SR release. I've got a few other things coming out this year as well, so I'm really excited about it all. I'm also hoping to line up some more D20 work in the near future--Origins was very promising.

Thanks Michelle! I hope your D20 work is as good as the work you did for FASA, if it is we (D20 nuts unanymous) would be very happy. Hey, who knows, this is free advertisement ;-)

Btw, how is MW:DA?

art and money

also on the subject of art.......as an artist i dont get to have many crusades in my life, so publishers should see that what they are paying is what they get... you pay nothing for art or very little and that is the art you get nothing or very little........ i see so much art that hurts the game books when if the publisher would spend a bit on the art, maybe more on each piece of art and cut down on the number of pieces in each book if your budget wont hold up, some books i see have too much art and some not enough ......... anyway you get what you pay for, you want good artists it costs money and most good artists are professionals......

Actually, I haven't gotten a single chance to look at MW:DA, sad to say. The figures look awfully pretty, though. And thank you for the compliment on my previous SR work. :) It's very kind of you.

I do have a bit coming up in FFG's Path of the Sword, and I was also one of the writers of Prophecies of the Dragon for Wheel of Time. Naturally, mine was the most pilloried chapter, but what can you do? Life goes on... :)

@Thomas
I think your absolutely right, although this thread isn't about art ;-)
But i think it will only get worse before it gets better, there's allready a glut of D20 material out there and from the look of things it will only get more gluttenous. People/companies want to get 'rich' quickly by jumping on the D20 bandwagon, often corners get cut due to lack of funding, experience, or due to plain old maximizing profit. There are a couple of things that can happen: mediocre art, unprofessional editing, and of course the unexperienced layout artist... Often it's all three, the worst is when there's a lot of uninspired writing (we have to fill a complete book with the psycology of X for example).

It's not just that it goes for art, but it works for all parts of publishing, you get what you pay for. I just wish that it also was true for the consumer :-(

@Michelle
What? But you edited the rulebook (and the internal bible, i wonder what that is ;-) Ahh... Give us a bone ;-)

No prob Lady A. I might not be around the DS forums as much as i used to, but the SR writing is still much appreciated (and editors don't get praised that often).

I like FFG's books (just wish i could get them sooner around here), i'm looking forward to the 'splat' books that they'll produce. To be honest, although i do own both WoT books (they are very beautifull), i don't really like gaming in that world, it just seems wrong (i do like to read them though, just like the R.J. books)...

*smack the forehead*

You're absolutely right. I was thinking about the demos at Origins this past weekend, which I did not get to play due to time constraints and such. It's been a few months since the MW rules crossed my desk, and so they've faded in my memory with the passage of time. :)

Basically, I liked the rules, but didn't get a chance to playtest them. And more than that is pretty much forbidden by my NDA. Sorry. I tend to keep pretty close to the vest on stuff like that.

The internal bible is basically what they'd give you if you got a job writing for the game, especially for fiction.

Cergorach, pardon if i missed the idea of the thread, but kinda new around these parts.........was just chiming in on the idea of art for the books as indicated in the thread about editing and layout, and paying people in general......and included my own observation about art in d20 books

@Thomas
Sorry if i did not express myself correctly, i was not trying to be hostile. And i have to agree with you.

@Michelle
I have mixed feelings about the minis, some are pretty good, some are horrible (the converted mining mech comes to mind). I am hopefull that i lwill like the new game, now i hope my friends will play this with me (it's disappointing how few people are willing to learn something as complex as CBT *pout*). NDAs are EVIL ;-)
