Airwalkrr's 4e Game IC: Ch 2 Amnesia

Erik

Let's just mind our own business all right? i don't care who is inside this crate,as long they don't mess with us.and vice-versa. - Krawlinstar says, trying to avoid any kind of trouble in the trip.

"What he said. Best we keep a low profile and stand out of trouble." Erik ads, casually looking around for possible ambush sites... all habits die slowly...

"Well I for a change would like to know." Petron says. "That I'd like to KNOW!" he repeats, louder. "We can take a peek when we get down." he adds with a grin and a thumb up.

The day's travel is long and you have few stops to rest and stretch your legs from riding atop the bumpy carriage. The Grand Highway is well-paved, but that doesn't make it a whole lot more comfortable. During the precious few stops that you do make, no one emerges from the carriage and the curtains remain drawn. The groom takes only enough time to water and feed the horses before you are back up on the carriage and on your way each time.

After a difficult day, you arrive around dusk at a roadside tavern. Outside you can see a painted sign with a green leaf and pipe hanging over the door. A young child, a blonde-haired girl with a tawny complexion and bare feet sweeps the steps outside the inn as you approach. The groom removes the reigns from the horses and hitches them to a series of posts outside, as there appears to be no stable.[sblock=Lia]Due to your keen perception, you notice that there did indeed used to be a stable next to the inn. There are a few remnants of corner posts which are consistent with the size of a modest roadside inn's stable. However, something has destroyed it, quite recently you imagine, due to the amount of debris that still remains to be cleared.[/sblock]After you get down and take a moment to stretch your legs, you notice that the carriage opens for the very first time and an elegant woman dressed completely in black exits after a maidservant steps out to place a portable wooden stair beneath the carriage. The woman wears a black shawl over her head, but you can see her skin is a fine ivory color, her lips as red as the evening sun which has just recently set. Even in the low light of the lanterns hanging outside the inn, her beauty is breathtaking. She looks around and huffs, "This is the best we can do? Well, I never..."

After considering things for a moment she descends the stair and orders her maidservant to fetch her things. She then enters the inn, snobbishly turning her nose up at the blonde girl who meekly curtsies as she passes.

You follow soon after into the inn to find the woman arguing with the goodwife. "This is intolerable! I was told the Oaken Hearth Suite would be available for me when I arrived. Now I'm to find that I am expected to share a room with my servants? This simply won't do. I demand that you make the suite suitable for me immediately."

"But Madam," the goodwife protests as politely as possible, "that suite is haunted and cursed. You do not understand what peril you would be placing yourself in were you to stay there. I do apologize but it has been some time since we sent word for the priests of Manas to come and consecrate the area. They will be here in a few days, but there is nothing I can do for you at this time."

By the Luminous one! perdon my intrusion ladies, but did you just said that there is a haunted room in this humble tavern? as a cleric of Pelor is my duty to clear that place of evil spirits. lead me there at once and in the way tell me what happened there! - he said, knowing he should hear his own words and mind his own business...but this wasn't his business after all?

"Merciful heavens!" the goodwife cries out in surprise mixed with delight, "A blessing from the gods! To think, a priest of the holy church of the sun god here in my humble inn. Well, Madam Rilfree, you might just find your troubles solved here soon. Come with me Holy Father. Oh, and I'm sorry, I did not catch your name." As the goodwife speaks she tugs on Krawlinstar pulling him down a hallway where you imagine several rooms are located.

Erik

"Looks like this could become a long day... I really hoped to get some rest after the bumpy ride."
Erik says quietly to Petron and Lia.

"I agree brother, although I'd like to spend the night with this up-nose lady." Petron says, sending an elbow crushing to Erik's ribs. "Excuse me my lady, I speak on behalf of my comrades here." he starts, trying to catch the attention of Madam Rilfree. "You have had the grace of carrying us in your carriage, and for that I offer you the services of this fine crew." he makes a gesture towards the rest of the group. "Father Krawlinstar is our religious pillar, and we are glad he can be of help in this dire moment. I'll escort him to assure his safety, with me men and Lia!" the calls out to the others, and marches in with military gape.

Lia mentions the recent destruction of the stables to the others before they get down from the top of the coach.

When Petron volunteers the group, Lia just shook her head. The one thing a career enlisted soldier knew was that you never volunteer for anything.

Erik

"What... wait... ho died and made you our leader, brother? Krawlinstar fulfilling his religious duties is one thing. Trying to get your 'pillar' somewhere another. You may offer your 'service' whoever you will.

... But yes, I will have an eye on the Father, too."
Erik response, rubbing his ribs.

The goodwife grabs a lantern and drags Krawlinstar to the very end of the hallway in the west wing (it is only a single story structure) to a broad set of double doors that lie closed. She pushes the cleric up to the front of the doors and points to the handle. "Aside from the body, which we buried in all due haste up on the hill, everything is just the way we found it. Don't want to disturb the spirit, you see. I haven't even been in there to clean so mind the dust." She then takes a number of steps backward down to the hallway to watch from what she clearly considers to be a more than safe distance. It seems Madam Rilfree has declined to follow you and remains in the foyer. The only light in the long hallway comes from a couple of wall-mounted lanterns spaced about 3 meters apart down the hallway and the goodwife's hooded lantern.

You uneasily open the door to find a spacious room with a fireplace at one end, some sitting furniture, and a large bed upon which are several dark brown stains. Sitting on the bed is a small box of ashwood banded with iron. It lies open and empty. The room looks haunting and empty, despite its furnishings. Colors don't seem quite so right here either, everything seems colored in a faded pallor of grey. From the dim room you hear a very faint voice call out to you, "Rest... I must rest..."
GM: Begin the skill challenge: Put the troubled spirit to rest.

I am going to do skill challenges a little bit differently from now on. The training wheels are off, and I won't be giving you the primary skills and secondary skills at the start. However, I will provide hints in every scene to indicate which skills are primary and which are secondary. For this skill challenge, I will give you two examples. In this scene for instance, it should be clear that a Religion check might tell you more about the type of spirit that haunts this room. A Diplomacy check might persuade the goodwife to tell you more about the circumstances surrounding the death of the man whose spirit now haunts the room. At certain points in the skill challenge, you may unlock uses other skills, at which point I will provide hints as to which skill(s) has been unlocked through a description or unfolding narrative. The idea is to get you to roleplay your skills a bit more. Circumstance bonuses will be granted for good roleplaying. As usual, everyone takes a turn before a new round begins. You can use your turn to aid another's check if you don't feel up to making the check yourself.
