Airwalkrr's Maure Castle 3.5 OOC

Well, in game terms the concept is a reskinned bard, as I essentially wanted a character with a focus on lore and history without having to be locked into to bardism.

Master painter who turned to magic to get visions of the past he could then capture in his work.

The divinations are what would be important to him, but for adventuring purposes it`d be buffs.

Ftr2 / Rge2 / Wiz5 / LoreMaster 3

Is close to a non-bard bard

You gain:
Better spelllist and more spells per day than equivalent bard
Evasion

You still have:
Ability to cast in armour (If Twilight is allowed here, it is in PHB2 in an aside under duskblade so that is a bit dubious)

You lose:
Sucky caster level
Bardic Music
Bardic Knowledge is not as good
Slightly fewer hitpoints

+++++++++++++++++
You might have to work hard to not suck though

Straight bard or beguiler look easier to build and justify

Yeah, this is probably not the campaign to try this build. It sounds like its roleplay-based and this just isn't that kind of campaign. It's a dungeon-crawl, and a tough one. You need a solid build, not something that is rather experimental, which is what this seems to be. Bard or beguiler would be better.

Well, I have gone two ways with this, there are two niches that might need filling, so I have go one for each:

In the Blue Corner.

Jonas.

We know what Paladins look like, long blond hair, perfect teeth, shiny fullplate that they wear all the time and perched astride a noble steed.

Jonas is not that kind of Paladin. His origins are not to be spoken of, believed in the slums. What is known is that he had a short and spectacular career as an enforcer for his local Thieves Guild, branching out as a Bounty Hunter with a reputation for finding people who did not want to be found.

Speculation on the street as to why he changed sides is varied, but he is now even more diligent and remorseless as a servant of law and justice than he was before.

Out of combat talk to people and gather info

In the Red Corner:

Savimbi

"Yes, as a matter of fact the world does owe me a living"

Savimbi regards the entire world and everyone in it as being their for his amusement. He is not actually malicious enough to be CE, in fact he does not really have a malicious bone in his body. But he loves the to himself and take chances; this might be in a dark and unpleasent dungeon against some exotic beastie, it might be by trying to con a noble and cuckold him into the bargain, it might be at the gaming tables or it might be by taking a bunch of friends up on a flying carpet as high as you can get, then jumping off and seeing who waits longest before activating their ring of feather fall.

Yes, honestly, the rogue 3/fighter 4/ranger 3/paladin 3 not only doesn't have the right amount of levels (you start at 12th-level, not 13th), but doesn't seem to match up by any stretch of the imagination to the core concept of a pure character of ANY of those classes you've taken. A rogue 12 built and geared for raw damage output would spank that build in every category but hit points. A fighter 12 could reach incredibly high AC and still dish out impressive damage and take hits reliably. A ranger 12 would either soar in melee with powerful two-weapon fighting or waste foes from afar with ranged attacks all while backing up the group with up to 3rd-level spells. The paladin 12 would be a substantial secondary healer with the ability to burst damage on the really tough foes via smite evil while having great saving throws all around and a powerful mount he could summon in the situations where it was viable (there will be a few), not to mention the bolstering against fear and protection from diseases he'd provide. All in all, the multiclass monster you are proposing is a jack of all trades and master of none.

The second character, I can't even tell what class you chose. I'm assuming some kind of wizard. Was that supposed to be an eldritch knight build?

I keep forgetting beguilers use Int as a casting stat. I looked at the Cha and thought "well, that can't be a beguiler."

That also would make for a great 1e Illusionist build.

Be even better if it had a 5 in one of the attributes to give the character some character. ;)

I'm thinking about hiring a hireling -- a minstrel to accompany us to sing about our exploits, much along the lines of "Brave Sir Robin"

You'll notice I made the beguiler available as a class for gnomes. :) They don't get a lot of other choices otherwise.

A hireling would be perfectly acceptable, but generally only NPCs with NPC class levels will be available unless you take the Leadership feat.
