Amazon out of Gift Set!

Shipping estimate: June 16-June 24.
Delivery Estimate: June 26-July 11.

I can't say how I feel here because Morrus' grandmother would cry.

I'll just say: When you bring out a product bundle that offers a discount on the total cost as opposed to buying the books separately for more it's only common sense to prepare to sell far more of the bundle than the individual products. Last time someone dropped the ball like this Galileo showed up Aristotle. Buy.com, gift set delays and leaked pdfs, oh my.

edit: please take the snark in this comment as a symptom of frustration.

My order is still scheduled for the 10th, but I bought the PHB from my FLGS at list. I figure, it will take me some time to read and make sample characters before I really need the other two. It also gives me some intimate time with the PHB that I probably would not have taken.

If I had all three, I would be putting one down to read another, to put that down and read the third and bounce back in forth with geeky froth oozing from my mouth and I tried to absorb it all.

I pre-ordered from Amazon on Feb 7th. When I had tax return money. Little did I know that they don't actually charge you until they get ready to ship the books. So of course they try using my H&R Block card to get some money but that was drained in March. I'm lousy at saving money. I know this about myself. THAT was why I pre-ordered! So it would be paid for already! :(

So, I scrounged around and came up with some money to put on another card on Friday to change the payment and make it go through. Now instead of estimated delivery on June 10th like it's said for awhile, it tells me my gift set should be delivered between June 11 and June 16. Not too horribly long to wait, but still. I was at my LCS today and held the DMG and MM in my hands, but I can't afford to pay full price when I can get a book for free by using Amazon. So I'll suck it up this time and know better in the future. I just better get my books next week (hopefully early). If they revise the estimated delivery any further back I'm gonna be a real unhappy customer.

BTW: My LCS sold out of PHBs and Gift Sets. They had 2 DMGs and 2 MMs left when I was there first thing after opening this morning. Sound positive to me in that respect.

I am in the camp that says that "the whole point of pre-ordering is for the company to know how much stock to get."

If Amazon knew they did not have enough stock to fill all of the pre-orders, and were unable to get more, why did they wait until this morning to let me know?

Well I am going on vacation this coming week.. if they are not here when I return I will buy them locally... its too bad.. Amazon KNEW what the demand was... hence the pre-order part...

Not necessarily. Many folks, such as myself, waited until the 11th hour (well, May 28th in my case) to pre-order. I wouldn't be surprised if half or more gift set pre-orders were placed in late May or early June.

I mean, it is not like Amazon wants to screw people--the bottom line is sales; they have lost some business with this minor fiasco, not to mention numerous angry emails. So I'm thinking they just under-estimated the demand for the gift set (although there is an argument that they should have known it would be higher, given the cost differential).

Yes but the thing is it really made people miss out on the 4e release party! Many dnd fans (such as me) live in countries that have NO gaming stores, simply because the concept of gaming as such does not exist there (thus the stores don't sell). For them, places like amazon are their only links to get in on the action. WHen exchnage rates are taken into consideration AND the horrendous shipping costs these people (including moi) want to save every single penny they can. We have EVERY incentive to get the pdf's, instead of getting the books (but most of us don't)

Now, those who only ordered the gift set as the only book set and who did download the pdfs are screwed; they missed out on the global release party, the excitement and thrill and are somewhat behind the curve seeing people have all these great discussions yet not able to really participate (since they don't know the rules)

I forsee a LOT of topics in the next few weeks which will already have been discussed to death by those of us on the bandwagon since the getgo.

Fine. Let's say 50% of preorders are from the very last week.
What about people, including me, including people who preordered 6 months ago, who got to wait still?

As I've said a few times already, I'm not annoyed at the waiting, but annoyed at the lack of a single e-mail by amazon informing me of this.

I feel strangely compelled to cancel my gift set and buy...I dunno...some new Nike shoes or something.

[Edit: With all the spam gone, the joke's no longer amusing...in case it ever was. Good job mods dealing with that so early on a Sunday morning.]
