I replaced the hard drive. I still have the original hard drive, and in event of a serious failure, I could put it right back in, and nothing's changed (my system's old enough that it's out of warranty, regardless, and I don't have the lifetime service).takyris said:Hey, 'Dru, how'd you up the disk-space? Can you do it and keep the same box (which, ya know, has the "lifetime purchase" deal on it)? Was it official, or did you hack it by popping in a few more hard drives?
I was very paranoid about doing it, actually, and wanted to be very cautious. The instructions I used (along with a linux boot ISO image and win98 boot floppy) spelled out the process step-by-step, and was exteremely concerned with making sure you didn't mess up your existing installation.
Essentially, you use a Linux boot disc to back up your existing drive to a larger one, and then expand the image on the new drive. (although the instructions covered every possible configuration of one and two drives, I took the slow option, to preserve all of the recorded programs on my Tivo at that time.)
Considering some of the things you can do to a Tivo now, my upgrade was pretty tame.
