Thessaly Thomas, always a bit of a class nerd with her peculiar interests and quiet demeanor, was the first true Mage to touch the Grand Grimoire in centuries and was a prize the book could not pass up.

She hadn't meant to find it...she was working her shift in the campus library, reshelving a few old books that the history professor had left out from the archives. The library had just recieved a shipment of rare and unique books for classification and verification, and she was naturally drawn to the strange art and design of the Grimoire.

Working late, as she was, there was no one else around to hear her startled scream when the manacle whipped around and latched tightly around her left wrist. Nor to hear the book speaking to her, explaining, entreating, and finally laying down the line. It was attached to her for keeps. Until she learned enough magic to escape it, or make it let go.

Despite the Grimoire's heckling, Thessaly turned out to be quite a good student, and possessed a natural talent for the mystic art that was reflected by her immense reserves of arcane power. Although she's only mastered basic spells, even those powers helped her recognize a magical artifact being sold at an antique shop...a strange amulet shaped like a stylized eye.

With the aid of some spells, and the Grand Grimoire's memory of magical trivia, Thessally worked out that it was a warding amulet called Asteron's Eye...a potent physical and spiritual barrier against harm.

Girded by the Eye, Thessaly has become more willing to take risks in her studies; a development greeted by the Grimoire with mixed pleasure and caution.

The Grand Grimoire is a fabulous tome in the old style; cured and embossed leather stretched over thin wood planks for the covers, with rich parchment pages within. The embossing shows fantastical creatures and mystic symbols in great detail, and across the front cover the patterns seem to form a face. An oddity is the strip of iron that runs down the spine of the book, connecting to an iron chain with a manacle attached to it.

This book has been imbued magically with consciousness and a surly, cantankerous mentor's personality. It claims to be the sum total of all the wizards that have ever contributed to it, but this claim is hard to verify...and the Grimoire is prone to exagerrating its own prowess. The face on the cover can animate at the book's option, and communicate verbally. The manacle is also self-animating, and it uses it either as a clumsy manipulative appendage (hence the terrible DX) or to bind itself to a prospective student. The manacle is DC 30 to escape once clamped. The Grimoire is able to shrink itself down to a much smaller size at will, and in that shrunken state can cling to the wristband of the manacle...this makes it much easier to carry, and much less obvious.

When bound to a student, the Grimoire takes on a symbiotic relationship with him, growing in power as the student learns magic. Because of this, the book is highly motivated to teach.

(Note - The armor reflects the magically strengthened covers of the book. It doesn't apply to the pages.)

Kei-chan is a 15 year old young man who currently lives alone while attending the local high school. Although an orphan, he certainly doesn't want for anything -- his house is easily the size of his classmates' houses put together, and his distant grandfather ensures that it is looked in on three times a week by an ever-changing roster of maids, mostly pretty young women.

Kei doesn't pay them any attention, however, as he is usually either busy with schoolwork or wrapped up in remembering times when he wasn't an orphan, wondering just what it was that happened to his parents. Nobody he knows will talk about it, and sometimes when he walks past their old bedroom he gets the strangest feeling...

Edited: I hadn't taken the two human feats, and the one I had taken Kei didn't meet the prerequisites for. So I replaced "Dodge" with "Run" and "Lightning Reflexes" and used the two points I'd spent on Dodge to increase his Defense Combat Mastery -- which points up an imbalance in the system.

Here's a bit of background:

Taka was born to unknown parents somewhere outside of the metropolis of Desticius. No details are known regarding the first five years of her life, as her records of her real name and origin have not been located. When she was about five years old, she was sold by a travelling slaver along with several other children to a small-time Destician arena proprietor. Most children in that position don't live long. Those who do become legends. Taka is one such legend.

Taka grew up fighting battle after battle with her peers. Killing was the only subject in which she received education, and she was a straight-A student. She worked her way through the leagues, eventually being sold to other arena owners. Even in a city which is home to thousands of warriors, the young girl managed to stand out. Her incredible agility and acrobatic talents amused the crowd, and she attracted quite a bit of attention. By the time she was a teenager, she was among the most famous gladiators in the whole city.

And that was the only life she had ever known.

When she was seventeen years old, Taka was purchased for the last time. This time her owner was not an arena proprietor, but an independent businessman. He knew of Taka's abilities to kill, and, in need of a personal assassin, bought the young woman and brought her into his home. He fed her and gave her a place to stay, but she was never treated much better than a domesticated animal. Accustomed to such treatment, Taka never complained, but more and more she would question the life she had been raised into.

Eliminating target after target on behalf of her patron, her skills only developed further. Unrestrained by the gladiatorial setting, Taka developed great stealth and learned to kill even more quickly, but she learned much more than that. Her wealthy owner's butler sympathized with the tormented girl, teaching her to read and to think for herself. She began to realize what it meant to live a normal life and how to be a real human.

She was frightened to leave, but she could no longer stand the empty nonhumanity of her life. In the middle of the night, with many tears, she fled. She ran from the manor in which she had lived, and ran, too, from the city which had raised her to be nothing but an animal and a killer.

It has been just over a year. Taka has travelled extensively and spent much time studying. She has met many people, and is beginning to capture the elements of which she had previously been deprived.

But, of course, she is no worse at killing, and she does still have to make a living.

Psst. You get two feats at level one, cuz yer a human bein'. :)

D'oh! And there I was paying for my feat like a sucker. I'll edit it.

And if anyone's wondering about why I took two levels of Damn Healthy and some ranks in DCM, I'm trying to mimic certain characters' ability to take cartoonish amounts of punishment without actually being hurt -- think the tendency for the hero of Love Hina to get knocked two or three blocks by Naru Narusagawa when she's mad at him.

I like how the only male character happens to have the girl magnet defect. :D Should make for interesting roleplaying scenarios!

Allright, now we're just waiting on Imerak. Imerak, I bequeath (is that spelled right? does it matter?) thee, give unto me thine character that I may commence this adventure.

Everyone else... just e-glare at Imerak until the character gets posted, I guess.

You spelled it right, but it's not the word you meant to use. You wanted "beseech"; "bequeath" involves giving something to someone, often when you're dead -- ie, as part of your will.

I'll shut up now. :o
