Anyone got the Dummies book?

Though how a book that the writers can't possibly have read (since it's not out) could be known to be one of the top 10 products, i'm not sure.

Given that the writers are WotC staff, it's quite possible that they have in fact read Weapons of Legacy.

It's about D&D, not d20, so I can see the reason they didn't include third party stuff.
'D&D', if that includes Unearthed Arcana (a WotC D&D book), uses rules directly taken (and acknowledged so) from third-party publishers, doesn't it?

Just a thought.

From my brief (read: I looked at the lists...) perusal of the book, UA is not listed. Take that as you will.

I have read the book. I borrowed it from our local library. I am a fan of the Dummies books they have helped me with a lot of computer programs, how to work my digital camera. I think they are great for people who know very little about a subject and want to know more. A good starting point.

For the most part I think it does this with DnD. It breaks the rules down and makes them easier to understand. It helps you build your first character. Gives you information on good feat chains. Explains AOOs and flanking.

My only objection was the chapter that teaches how to min max and cherry pick. Mainly because the way it was written. You can't have your character live unless he is uber powered and this is how to do it. It gives the impression that it is the ONLY way to play that taking a level of say rogue should be a power decision not a role playing decision.

Some interesting ideas here that I've been using for a while now.

For example, the various 'trees' of feats recommended for characters. I've done those for NPC's for a while so that when the party is fighting orcs, they fight the 'bruiser' squad and when in a city of swashbucklers, the 'agile' squad so to speak.

And man, they had some stat blocks here that were really brief. Might be worth cribbing some of that for my own game.

Within certain criteria, I have every book ever published about RPGs and the people who play them.

As an intro to gaming, D&D4D is a pretty solid. It's a bit difficult for me to imagine what it must be like to be a newby (it's been so long  ), but my guess is this book would be a big help if you don't already know anyone who plays.

It doesn't have much to offer old-timers though and, as mentioned above, the top 10s aren't worth the paper they're printed on.

Overall, I give it B+ to A-.

By the way, I bought my copy from Thalmin (i.e Games Plus). :)
