anyone still play West End Games d6 Star Wars?

Yes!

Yes, my friends and I still do for Star Wars.

We tried the D20 SW and didn't like it, so we went back to the D6 version. Plus, between all of us, I think we had all of the old WEG books and supplements anyway, so it made sense to just keep playing that version.

However, we play D20 for fantasy.

But one time in practice combat we had a 10th level Jedi kill Darth Maul in 2 rounds. I'm not sure how to have the long, drawn out duel in game terms that was exhibited at the end of Phantom Menace.
I think that's a relic of RPGs in general - even in D6, it was reasonably difficult to make a fight last longer than a few rounds...certainly nothing akin to the minutes they last in the movies!

Even a climactic battle like the one at the end of Return of the Jedi would have a hard time happening in either D6 or D20 Star Wars - more likely, the combat would take 3-4 rounds.

One thing I like about d20 Star Wars:
--Jedi of high power no longer shrug off combats effortlessly. Thanks to spending vitality to power abilities, the jedi I play looks like he's been through the wringer after EVERY combat, because he's missing more than half his vitality. :)

One thing I like about d6 Star Wars:
--a small group can run a very dramatic game full of combat, hair-splitting action without a DM doing a lot of tailoring. Because a single character is good at so MANy things, you can even run single DM-player games without a lot of prep. I used to do it all the time in the 90's, In d20 SW, playing a single jedi or Pilot will probably get you killed.

Henry's nailed the biggest difference, really.

d6, one character can do nearly anything.

d20, like all class base systems, limits the character in abilities more than the d6 system.

:)

not for a few years. MY firend who has the d6 books moved one so not able to play the game without the books. I really liked the system, it actually got the power of the Jedi right unlike the d20 version.

I haven't played it in a while, but I'd like to dust off my Rebellion Era campaign for a few sessions of Star Wars fun. Maybe someday I'll be able to use my Clone Wars scenario that I outlined for the game in the mid 90s . . .

Well, in my experience with the system, and I've been playing since the release of it, that's not the case. Jedi are balanced perfectly with the other classes, so much to the point that there are many, many more discussions of them being UNDERpowered. The Vitality cost for Force Powers is not something to be ignored, and it does a huge amount in balancing out the Jedi's abilities.

I'll agree with this. I play in Living Force, and the PCs in the group I play with regularly are all around 11th level now. Yes, the Jedi in our group (one's a Jedi Guardian / Jedi Master, the other a Jedi Consular / Jedi Investigator / Jedi Master) can kick serious butt, in certain circumstances -- though, I'd say that our group's Soldier / Elite Trooper is easily their equal on butt-kicking ability.

However, when you get outside of combat, the Jedi tend to not have as much to contribute (since almost all of their skill points have been spent on Force skills), so it's a really good thing that our group has a Scout pilot, a Scoundrel for various skills, a Noble diplomat, etc. And, as Henry points out, a Jedi tends to get real tired, real fast...because they're spending their VPs on both (a) Force abilities, and (b) being the party's meat shield.

And, as far as Jedi being way overpowered...if you take a look at the WotC SWRPG boards, you'll see a whole lot of threads from players complaining that the classes are underpowered, and the use of VP to power Force abilities nerfs the classes. (Then again, a lot of these players seem to be coming from video games like KotOR, where they're used to Jedi being one-man day-long wrecking crews).

And i just want to add that in this video game era this is exactly the mentality, and expectations, many gamers have. Not that it's wrong, but it's not what i want to run or play, a one man army with QuickLoad.

Is anyone here familiar with d6 and d20 and actually PREFER the latter? Most folks seem to like the WEG version.
I'm extensively familiar with both, and prefer the D20 version. Ankh-Morpok Guard is the same way, I believe.
