Here's a dumb little quiz I was just thinking about. Some people don't actually game that much, but call themselves gamers. They're really wanna-be gamers..AKA PSEUDOGAMERS. Possibly even Were-Gamers.

Here's the quiz:
1. Do you spend more time making characters than playing them?
2. Do you spend more time on internet discussion groups than actually playing RPGs?
3. Do you play RPG's just to see your buddies and/or hit on a gamer-gurl'?
4. Do you create D&D worlds only to run games in them once or twice?
5. Do you spend your time in school/work thinking about gaming, but really don't game that much?
6. Do you think about gaming when you are intimate with your partner(s)?
7. Did you name your dog/child Mordenkainen, but don't let him game with you?
8. Do you give a lot of gaming advice because you've read the rules thouroughly or because you've playtested them thouroughly?

I don't get this. 1. is what players mainly do to prepare for the game. So, in your view, a players who prepares more for the game than he actually playes is a pseudo-gamer? But, if a DM does that he's just .. dedicated, or what?

Some just like to prepare for the games more than others. Doesn't make them pseudo- or anything else but just gamers.

I don't get this. 1. is what players mainly do to prepare for the game. So, in your view, a players who prepares more for the game than he actually playes is a pseudo-gamer? But, if a DM does that he's just .. dedicated, or what?

Between-game work isn't "making" a character. I think the idea here is that generally speaking, you go through character generation once, then use the character for many sessions. The image evoked by the question here is of someone sitting at home spending lots of time creating loads of characters that never even get used once.

I was a psuedo-gamer for 3 1/2 years while living in another country.

Of course, I used that to my advantage because I have been back home for 1 1/2 years and run three campaigns in part based on notes made during my psuedo-gaming "wilderness".

Theoretical Gamer

Being a physicist, I perfer the term "Theoretical Gamer" to the term pseudogamer (except for the guy who comes to games to see his friends and to hit on gaming girls that's definitely a poser). Yes, I spend most of my time inventing worlds and creating new rules and I have far more worlds than my players could ever play. But just because I tend to do stuff about gaming every day and then only run or play once a week doesn't make me seem any less a gamer than the guy who only thinks about gaming when his barbarian is letting lose with rage and axe.

> Define making as opposed to playing. Of course, I sit both in the player and in the DM seat. I spend several hours a week thinking about characterization for my PC, and for NPC's.

2. Do you spend more time on internet discussion groups than actually playing RPGs?

> Well, I only play twice a week. Maybe 8 hours total. There is game prep, but a lot of that comes while perusing EN World. I post, on average, 2.91 post/day on the web board for the game I play in. I have a shiny new personal forum here for the game I run. Yes, I am on internet discussion groups more than I actually play.

> I believe in playing RPG's with my friends. It's part of "having fun". But, that is not the only reason why I game.

> Anymore, I focus on making my current world better.

> I do have ideas while at work and I don't feel like I game as much as I would like.

> Um, no!

> Nope!

> Yes!

That's a great point..but this is supposed to be a tongue-in-cheek post

I always appreciated when players come to the game with their characters and back-up characters up to date (we always had a lot of back-up characters because of high turn-over).

I say 'appreciated' because right now I'm a pseudogamer.
