Attacks of opportunity?

I know this subject gets ran into the ground but I was wondering about something. I'm DM'ing a group that has a sorcerer in it. He has like 15 ranks in concentration. So he casts defensively and only fails on a 1. Is there anyway to actually make casting in combat dangerous for him again?

Combat is always dangerous for someone with d4 hd ;)

Ready action works great though, blast away with whatever and it'll probably disrupt that spell.

Yes...I'd definitely say the best counterspell is blasting the enemy with a damage spell like magic missile or scorching ray or worse, in many situations.

Readied action is one way to go, but if he is in melee range I generally prefer a full attack to take him out quickly.

d4 HD Casters should try to stay out of melee, defensive casting mastery or not.

An aside: You know that skills don't automatically fail on a 1, right?

Hmmm... Lessee It's a DC of 15 + Spell Level for his concentration check. His 15 modifier changes this to Spell Level for DC instead of 15+.

That's assuming he's casting defensively everytime. That blocks AoO's quite readily, but not readied actions...

So that means he'll need to declare a defensive casting, roll a d20 to beat the spell level, then make a SECOND concentration check at a DC of 10 + Damage Dealt + Spell Level when the readied action goes off. Use an archer or use a melee person right next to them. Don't worry about the AoO unless he gives you one, but ready an action to hit if he starts to cast.

The best I've seen this done was a swordsman who manuevered to 10' away from the enemy mage and declared a readied action to step in and hit the mage if the mage cast. It worked like a charm.

Remember, if it's your NPC, you don't have to declare readied actions to the players.

I'm sick as a dog, so I'm hoping that all made sense to you :)

You can use readied actions to swing a sword, shoot a bow, fire off a wand, etc. anytime he tries to cast :)

I was unaware you could ready a move action and a standard action.

It shouldn't have. The rules don't quite allow that.

You can take a 5' step along with a readied action, but only if you have not already moved. If the swordsman took a Move and then readied, he could not then take an additional Move when his action was triggered. He'd have to wait until his next turn to close the distance.

So a fighter would have no advantage of walking up to an enemy caster and readying an action to slice him in half, when the caster can simply take a 5'-step back while the fighter won't be able to move?
