B/X Bard charm

Baron Opal

First Post
Here’s the bardic charm skill for my B/X game. Much of the text is adapted from the 1st ed PHB.

The singing and playing of a bard has a chance of charming most creatures. Creatures within 40 feet of a bard have a chance of being charmed and entranced by his song. The bard plays for one round and then checks to see if the creatures are susceptible to his music (see chart). If they are then they must save against the charm effect. Even those that save must still listen to the music for one round and have their reaction level improved by one step. If the bard fails his roll there is no save required and no improvement in reaction. Those that are charmed can be subject to a suggestion from the bard at -2 on the save. However, if the creatures save vs. the suggestion they are also free from the charm. Each creature can only be subject to the bard’s charming words once per day.

The chart is similar to the cleric turning chart, but it starts with an 11 in the corner. It progresses one step each level with this progression: 11, 9, 7, 5, 3, R, R, C, C, C+, C+, C#

R: If the creature makes their save vs. charm their reaction is one level higher.
C: The creatures are at -4 on their charm save.
C+: The creatures are automatically charmed and are at -4 vs. suggestion.
C#: The creatures are automatically charmed and under a suggestion.

The bard can do this all day long, but each target can only be affected once a day. Also, the HD of the target is factored in since the turning chart is utilized. I/m trying to move away from a percentile roll and factor in the HD of the target. Arguably, the saving throw already does that.

I like that it uses a mechanic already in use in B/X, and that the chances of success have been slightly reduced.

Once you have the full class done, I'd love to see it.
