People not liking short races in fantasy games is a well-known phenomenon. Look at D&D Beyond's numbers for racial/species choices, or the count of shorter race characters in popular MMOs like WoW and FF14.

And realistically, any changes to BG3 need to be in a mod, as Larian is pretty much with BG3 development, outside the forthcoming Patch 8. They could always change their mind, of course, but I doubt that will happen.

it's a bit hard for people to have a chance to even like them when they haven't offered you any to engage with in the first place.

"how many people picked the short species companions?"
"none, this proves they're not liked"
"did you even offer them any short species companions"
"..."
BG3 has numerous short options for Tavs, like dwarf, gnome, and halfling. According to Larian’s stats, they’re the least picked options.

WoW has numerous short options for races; dwarves, gnomes, goblins, and vulpera. All of them are among the least played options.

my point is more that having a fully fleshed out representational compainion with their own storyline and strong character is a near guarantee to boost a species popularity, didn't githyanki gain a surge in popularity after the game came out? i'm sure that had nothing to do with Lae'zel's existence, right?

Mazzy in BG2 is just about the best companion you can have. A Halfling "Paladin".

One thing Bg1 and 2 has over 3 is the sheer amount of companions you can have.

given there are 10 (11 if dark origin had been it's own) companions and 11 species i'm surprised they didn't choose to have each companion be one of each species, there are three humans, five variants of elf(1 high(also vampire), 1 wood, 1 drow and 2 high half-elves), one tiefling, and a githyanki.

i haven't actually played BG3 so i don't know the characters extensively but going off the wiki what if:
Dark Urge - Dragonborn Unchanged(assumed default)
Astarion - Elf (wood)(vampire) Changed(subspecies)
Gale - Gnome Changed
Karlach - Tiefling Unchanged
Lae'zel - Githyanki Unchanged
Shadowheart - Halfling Changed
Wyll - Dwarf Changed
Halsin - Half-orc Changed
Jaheira - Half-elf (high) Unchanged(holdover)
Minsc - Human Unchanged(holdover)
Minthara - Drow Unchanged
i don't really know why they felt they had to separate drow from the other elf subspecies but it is what it is.
